The Melbourne Stars continued their impressive start to the season with a decisive victory over the Sydney Thunder at the Corroboree Group Manuka Oval in Canberra. The match commenced at 15:00, where the Stars showcased their batting prowess after winning the toss and opting to field.
Captain Marcus Stoinis marshaled his troops as the Melbourne Stars took to the field to defend their toss. The Thunder—captained by the experienced David Warner—had an uphill battle to wage, especially on a batting-friendly wicket. Stars’ bowlers kept up the pressure throughout the early stages of the innings, allowing a brutal performance to unravel.
The star of the game was Joe Clarke for the Melbourne Stars, blasting an explosive 60 runs to anchor his team’s innings. His innings with the bat was very handy as Thiruvananthapuram set a target of 132 runs to defend. They reached this remarkable total in only 14 overs. Clarke’s run out by Gilkes, stumping by Gilkes, bowled out by Green. He had done too great a job for his team already of laying bricks on the walls of very bad decisions.
In addition to Clarke’s notable contribution, Glenn Maxwell added 39 runs to the Stars’ total, further solidifying their batting strength. Together they smashed the Sydney Thunder’s bowlers into submission. Hadley was all over the place, leaking 32 runs in 3 overs, while Shadab Khan followed him up by bowling 24 runs at his 4 overs without any wickets.
For all the Thunder’s efforts, they were restricted and squeezed by some excellent Stars’ bowling lines. The best reflection of Green’s game-changing efforts was undoubtedly his one wicket – and more specifically just how he did it. Try as they might, the Thunder were unable to make a serious run at the Melbourne Stars’ total.
