Durham enjoyed a powerful day on day one of their home game versus Warwickshire. Ben McKinney tossed a tremendous five-inning effort that was key to their knockout performance. Durham won the toss and elected to bat first at their home ground in Chester-le-Street. This initial ruling created a very positive atmosphere for the day’s activities.
The game started with an early familiar test for Durham. Captain Alex Lees was lost to slick bowling from returnee Ethan Bamber on the very last ball of the first over. This tough early blow left the team scrambling under the weight of expectations. McKinney wasted little time in proving himself to be a catalyst. He stabilised the innings and would remain not out at the end of the day with a stunning 143 to his name.
Emilio Gay proved an indispensable partner to McKinney throughout their time together, working to lock down innings after the early opening-round loss. Unfortunately for Durham, he would face greater troubles soon after. In the final over of Ben Raine’s first innings bowled, the third wicket to go in seven balls. Only increasing worries for Durham’s lineup was this moment.
Despite these challenges, upon Gay’s dismissal, David Bedingham provided for the sixth wicket. Gay was trapped in behind off Booth strike’s bowling. That set the stage for Bedingham, who made an immediate impact with his very first delivery, hammering a boundary to the rope. Impressive Bedingham secured an extraordinary 58 run-half century. He was lucky to remain on the wicket after being dropped on two occasions during his innings.
Durham’s innings just kept unfolding as McKinney kept his cool to bring up his ton off 186 balls, looking every part a player comfortable under pressure. The highlight was a savage six over the legside boundary, as he raced past his previous career-best score of 121.
Matthew Potts played a big part in Durham’s total, going past 50 runs for the fourth time in his first-class career. Just as the day came to a close Durham were able to push themselves to a respectable score of 343 for seven.
