Rory McIlroy, a five-time major champion, is gearing up for the upcoming Open Championship after a notable performance in the Scottish Open last weekend. The 36-year-old professional golfer ended up two shots back of champion Chris Gotterup, sharing second place with England’s Marco Penge. And no wonder — this strong start to his season has given McIlroy an early season surge in confidence. Now, he’s set to turn his attention to one of golf’s most prestigious events.
Last weekend’s T4 at North Berwick was an important first step for McIlroy, who said that he was “really happy” with the state of his game. “I’m really happy with where my game is, the way I played over the weekend, the shots that I hit, how I controlled my ball flight,” he stated. After finally completing a career Grand Slam at the Masters in April, McIlroy struggled for the motivation to impact his newfound success. Now, he’s making that struggle work for his success.
As McIlroy gets ready for the Open, he looked back on everything that’s happened to him lately and sounded upbeat. As he jumped up and down he exclaimed, “It has been the best week ever! …in his effort to become the first player to win both the Masters and Scottish Open in the same season. While he did not find that success McIlroy is still hot and hungry.
As he heads into the Open, which he last won in 2014, McIlroy seems prepared to more seriously dedicate himself. He’ll be traveling to Portrush this evening, and then getting out onto the golf course first thing in the morning.
McIlroy can’t wait to land in Portrush tonight. He’s looking forward to heading out on the golf course bright and early tomorrow morning and really grappling with the challenges in store.
