Rory McIlroy prepares to face the deafening crowd at Bethpage Black. The Ryder Cup matches are less than two weeks away, scheduled for September 26-28. For McIlroy to jumpstart what he feels is a European team wonderful opportunity to get a win on American soil in the Ryder Cup first since 2012. Great as that opportunity is, their reception will be a hostile, partisan one.
As he gears up for the competition, McIlroy reflects on his recent observations of Novak Djokovic during the US Open. The Serbian tennis player demonstrated extraordinary grace under fire, pretending not to hear thousands of hostile fans in his quarterfinal match against Taylor Fritz. Djokovic’s mastery of playing to the crowd, at one point blowing kisses to the fans cheering for his rival, left McIlroy awestruck.
He’s been the best at handling that,” McIlroy stated, drawing parallels between Djokovic’s high-pressure moments and the challenges his team will face.
McIlroy had declared that Djokovic had motivated Europe’s golfers long before. Always, his motivational words would resonate with the American team, especially once they step in front of the intense pressures of the Ryder Cup. Controlling their own reactions and their own emotions he said was critical, especially with the American audiences that would be watching them unnoticed.
He joked that they’ll have a loud environment and change what they’ve been used to the last few years. This is a historic golf course that many fans are familiar with through past RTP tournaments.
Only slightly over two years ago, the European team met to finalize their roster. It now features ten seasoned iron men, plus thrilling newcomer Rasmus Hojgaard. McIlroy pointed out the growth of players like Robert MacIntyre, who transitioned from a rookie in Rome to a consistent contender on the PGA Tour, illustrating the depth of talent within their ranks.
As daunting as the challenge may be, we’re certainly up for it. Man, do I like Luke’s team that he’s collected,” McIlroy said.
McIlroy and partners will take on a stacked US-team, looking to win back the Ryder Cup after losing in Rome. Even with this challenge, he’s optimistic about Europe’s prospects. He’s sure that every single player on the roster has made noticeable strides during his two year tenure. This is a testament to his confidence in their combined experience and talent.
