Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott didn’t blink when showing support for his offensive coordinator Joe Brady. That support was especially important after the team endured a perplexing 30-10 loss to the Miami Dolphins. Despite the unexpected loss, McDermott did his best to reassure Buffalo fans and the media soon thereafter. He hailed his support for Brady and the offensive coaches through the remainder of the season.
In the aftermath of the Dolphins game, McDermott highlighted Brady’s determination to enhance the passing game, stating, “He’s intent on making sure that we’re doing everything possible to get the passing game going in the right direction and he’s fully confident in our staff and Joe in particular, but it’s not that he’s sitting back. He’s very proactive in his approach.”
Yet Brady’s strategy during the game drew down criticism, especially with what he decided to do (or not) during the game’s beginning stages. Even non-supporters recognized that he waited too long to ramp up passing attempts. In addition, the Bills’ passing efficiency significantly eclipsed their running game’s success versus the Dolphins. Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen averaged 0.3 seconds to throw during the game. Although he couldn’t get into much of a rhythm, when he needed to hit his receivers, he did it often and well.
Despite the loss, McDermott stressed the need for continuity with respect to the coaching staff. He stated, “Joe’s a good coach. He really is. We’ve got a really good offensive staff. They’ve had really good games. You’re going to have some games you want back, some play calls you want back.”
The Bills now look ahead to their upcoming clash against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. As they continue to make their preparations for this challenge, they have seen further hurdles with injuries that have taken out impact players. Rookie defensive end Landon Jackson will miss this week after suffering a knee injury last week. At the same time, tight end Dalton Kincaid missed the game against Miami with a hamstring injury.
As Buffalo seeks to rebound from their recent setback, McDermott’s confidence in Brady and his staff may prove vital in restoring momentum. Their continued emphasis should be on improving their offensive approach as they continue taking steps towards maximizing their chances at a strong finish against Tampa Bay.
