JJ McCarthy, the Minnesota Vikings’ shining young QB under center, is headed into the offseason program with full clearance. McCarthy used the past three months to strengthen a torn meniscus in his right knee. Instead, as the 10th overall selection in next year’s 2024 draft, he heads to the new chapter of his career unshackled. This represents an incredible reversal of fortune, given he missed his entire rookie season after suffering the injury.
During his recovery, McCarthy has put in the hours at the team facility, with an eye toward getting back strength and mobility. McKenzie’s progress hasn’t escaped the coaching staff’s attention, though, and they’ve been keeping a close eye on his readiness to take over the starting gig. Coach Kevin O’Connell expressed confidence in McCarthy’s capabilities.
“I think he’s ready to hit the ground running as of today,” O’Connell stated.
McCarthy has been working out with some of those again with coaches J.J. and Brett to hone those skills. Working with Packers running back Aaron Jones, pushing the competition and depth to his training plan. McCarthy is the only quarterback on the roster besides Brett Rypien. His continued development will be key for the Vikings as they hope to take the next step back to contention this season.
So we have a long and short plan all thought out as far as what we would like to do. he said. Forget even potential trades and free agency and then there’s still the draft. We are closely looking at who we would like to sign as our next player. Today, J.J. and Brett are both here working alongside us to assist in that process.
The organization anticipates that McCarthy will assume the starting role as they continue to evaluate his performance and potential for a long-term contract. His recent on-field rehab has left him well-positioned to make a major impact starting from day one of the offseason program.
McCarthy needs to be showing his readiness on an everyday basis. The Vikings are pleased to foster a competitive environment within their quarterback room. Now that they’ve got a plan, McCarthy and his staff are determined and it’s left the coaching staff optimistic about the incoming season.
As McCarthy continues to demonstrate his readiness, the Vikings look forward to building a competitive environment within their quarterback room. With a solid plan in place and McCarthy’s determination, the team is optimistic about the upcoming season.
