Matthew Fisher, a highly-rated right-arm fast-medium bowler, is hot off the press. Fisher currently plays for Surrey, and has previously played for the England Lions. He started his cricketing journey at an alarmingly early age. This debut came during a 40-over match against Leicestershire, making him the youngest player to participate in a competitive county match. Since then, he’s proven himself to be an undeniable force as a top-end talent in English cricket.
In his rather young first-class career, Fisher has taken 175 wickets in 56 matches, at an average of 28.16. His best bowling figures are an eye-popping 6-73, a testament to his wicket-taking ability and capacity to produce when needed most. Plus, he’s made a name for himself with the bat as well, averaging 17.77 and learning a top score of 88. These stats are a testament to Fisher’s all-round abilities, which would make him a dynamic and adaptable addition to any team.
This season has arguably been Fisher’s most productive, as he has taken 31 wickets in the County Championship. His consistently high level of play is what’s really turned heads. Despite facing challenges, including losing his development contract with the national side at the end of 2024, Fisher has remained resilient and dedicated to his craft.
Fisher has devoted the last three winters developing his talents with the England Lions. This experience has made him as battle-hardened as possible for the rigours of Test cricket. His first call-up to the Test squad is his second opportunity to make his England debut at the highest level. He earned one Test appearance on the 2022 tour of the West Indies.
