Matthew Caldwell Transitions from Panthers to Lead Timberwolves and Lynx

Matthew Caldwell has confirmed that he is stepping down as the business operations president of the Florida Panthers. Only this week, he is expected to accept a 10-year contract to become the CEO of the Minnesota Timberwolves and the WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx. On that day – August 27, 2025 – the promise of this announcement would have been realized. This was a deep career breakthrough for Caldwell, who has been an essential part of the Panthers’ success.

Caldwell’s run with the Panthers was a resounding success. During his tenure he has guided the organization to back-to-back-to-back Stanley Cup championships. What really stands out about his leadership is his steadfast dedication to innovation and growth. This devotion has brought him torrents of admiration amongst the league’s most lauded apparatus.

Marc and Alex, the ownership duo behind the Timberwolves and Lynx, said they were thrilled to have Caldwell take on this new role. Their collective vision is to develop their franchises into world-class organizations. They’re confident that Caldwell’s proven track record will help them get there.

“Our vision is for the Timberwolves and Lynx to set a new standard of excellence in pro sports and we’re confident that Matthew is the leader needed to make that a reality,” said Lore and Rodriguez. “Leading our organization into an innovative new era requires an exceptional individual at the helm and Matthew’s proven track record leading the business of the Florida Panthers is undeniable.”

Caldwell has a wonderful opportunity ahead to join the Timberwolves and Lynx. He’s well aware that a move away from the NHL represents an important crossroads in his career. He stated, “I love the NHL. I’ve enjoyed hockey and I’m a big fan of it. The NBA is just a much bigger, global platform. I really believe in Marc and Alex and their vision and what they’re trying to do. They’re trying to make Minnesota best in class.”

Along with his exciting new chapter in Minnesota, Caldwell departs from the Florida Panthers with a winning legacy. His impact on the organization is truly immeasurable. As he leaves, both employees and supporters share their sadness and extreme appreciation for his work with the organization.

“It’s tremendously bittersweet for our family, but we recognize this is an exceptional opportunity and great next step in his career. Matt’s impact on our organization has been immeasurable and he leaves with our respect and gratitude,” noted team owner Viola.

Under Caldwell’s leadership, strong moves like the Florida Panthers’ recent extension of their operating agreement with Broward County have put the panther on offense. This extension all but guarantees their continued presence in the South Florida market through 2033. This five year extension illustrates the continued promise and responsibility to deeply rooted community engagement practices and nonprofit infrastructure.

As Caldwell dives into this new chapter, he and the Panthers are certainly hoping for more success going forward. For him personally, his transition is a momentous occasion. It’s a landmark moment for the two organizations as they shoot for the stars in their own ambitious futures.
