Liverpool Women have announced the departure of their manager, Matt Beard, following a three-and-a-half-year tenure marked by significant achievements. Beard's second spell with the club came to an end after a 4-0 defeat to Manchester City on February 16. In his time at Liverpool, Beard successfully guided the team to promotion to the Women's Super League (WSL) in 2022 and secured their position in the top flight.
Beard's affiliation with Liverpool Women began in 2012 during his first stint as manager, where he led the team to two WSL titles before leaving in 2015. He rejoined the club in 2021 and immediately demonstrated his managerial prowess by achieving promotion to the WSL in his inaugural season back with the squad. Despite the recent setback against Manchester City, Beard leaves Liverpool Women positioned seventh in the women's top flight, a testament to his leadership and strategic acumen.
In a statement reflecting on his departure, Beard expressed gratitude towards Liverpool and its board for the opportunity to manage the team once more.
"I am proud with what we managed to achieve over the last three-and-a-half years, including promotion back to the WSL. I could not have asked for more from the players and staff, and thank them for all their sacrifice and support."
Beard also acknowledged the unwavering support from Liverpool's fanbase throughout his tenure.
"To our wonderful fans – what a journey it has been across two spells. We would never have achieved anything without you and I thank you for all your love."
With Beard's departure, Liverpool Women have announced Amber Whiteley as interim manager, effective immediately. As the team prepares for upcoming matches against Crystal Palace on March 2 and a Women's FA Cup quarter-final against Arsenal on March 9, Whiteley steps into her new role at a crucial juncture.
Beard remains optimistic about the future and plans to support Whiteley and the team from afar.
"I will reflect fondly on my time at Liverpool whilst considering my next steps, and look forward to continuing to support Amber and the team from afar for the rest of the season."
