Just ask Jean Mateta, the Crystal Palace forward who has this week been clarifying speculation around a supposed falling out with former teammate Wilfried Zaha. In 2023, Zaha transferred from English Premier League side Crystal Palace to Major League Soccer side Charlotte FC. He continued to strongly refute any reports of rift between him and Mateta. Zaha is on loan from Galatasaray – for now, at least. Today he continues to be a major player in conversations about the club’s historical and current inner workings.
Mateta’s on-field performance is now the target of this vicious campaign. This follows on from him netting a sensational hat-trick in a topsy-turvy 3-3 draw with Bournemouth. This performance reflected his growing impact at Crystal Palace. It put him on the map as a player to watch during Fiorentina’s thrilling Conference League run. Oliver Glasner, the team’s coach, has indicated that he will select his strongest squad for this important fixture, which raises expectations for Mateta’s contributions.
Mateta’s Rising Profile
Now, ahead of the 2025 season, Mateta has made himself into one of the Premier League’s best goal-scorers. Only Erling Haaland is higher than Mateta’s 10 goals, which makes his run all the more impressive and vital to the team’s success. In so doing, he became only the third Crystal Palace player to record more than 50 goal involvements in the league. Now, he sits in elite company along with Ebere Eze and Wilfried Zaha.
Despite these accomplishments, Mateta remains grounded. He is aware that critics have responded somewhat ambivalently to what he’s done. They particularly doubt his dreams of one day donning the shirt of the French national team. “I simply had to play to show what I could do,” he remarked, highlighting his determination to prove his worth.
Mateta’s journey has not been all sunscreen and smooth waters. After all, he just went four matches in nine days. These days, though, he is reportedly under pressure to maintain his excellent results but is themselves looking for more international prestige. Few would have doubted his ambitions at first, but with a lack of playing time at Crystal Palace leading up to this resurgence.
Zaha’s Perspective
Wilfried Zaha, now thriving at Charlotte FC, has added his two cents along the same lines. In particular, he sounded annoyed that they allow fans to dictate how he interacts with Mateta. “I’m sorry but my head’s on fire. Unfortunately, I need to talk about the Mateta situation because he doesn’t appear willing to. It takes me back to my playing days at Crystal Palace, where I would be on the field and could feel that everyone wasn’t truly excited about my success. It was never my intention to shame you.” As Zaha put it.
These comments embody Zaha’s wish to focus on friendship and camaraderie between teammates rather than competition. His transition to Charlotte FC has not diminished his connection with former teammates, as he continues to express support for their endeavors.
Looking Ahead
As Mateta prepares for future matches, including the upcoming Conference League encounter, he remains focused on proving himself on the pitch. The pressure to deliver results is brutal. More than anything, he’s looking to beat the odds and get the notice of Didier Deschamps, the coach of the French national squad.
With an eye on quality, Mateta has recalibrated his approach to his game and his goals. His goal now is to cement his spot at Crystal Palace and leave his mark on international football. The next few weeks will be crucial for him as he threads this needle between all these challenges and trying to get straight A’s.
