His head coach seems more than ready for an electric primetime challenge this weekend. As fate would have it, he’ll square off against the Indianapolis Colts, the team where his father, Marvin Harrison Sr., had a Hall of Fame, 13-season career. As foreshadowed in the intro, this game is personal for Harrison Jr. It reconnects him to his father’s legacy in the NFL.
Harrison Sr. was enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2016. He has a long-lasting and positive legacy with the Colts franchise. He was one of the teal team’s most valuable players this season. He went off, accounting for a combined 90 receptions for 1,114 yards and 10 touchdowns. Harrison Jr., who in his first NFL season proved he was special, racked up 62 receptions for 885 yards and eight touchdowns. Throughout his first 22 games, he’s done even better. He finished the 2018 regular season with 82 receptions for 1,191 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Harrison Jr. shared warm memories of his father’s amazing public service career. Twelve years later, those seconds from Indianapolis remain some of his favorite memories. He fondly recalled attending his father’s ring of honor ceremony, where he saw many fans sporting Harrison Sr.’s number 88 jerseys.
“That was just a good experience seeing a lot of 88 jerseys, seeing his name in the stadium, so definitely that was a cool experience for me.” – Marvin Harrison Jr.
>Harrison Jr.’s family lineage was successful in this professional sport. He knows how heavy the mantle is, carrying a name so closely related to perhaps the greatest athlete of all time. For Jones, he’s more focused on still trying to find his own lane in the league. He stated, “Not necessarily a good thing or a bad thing, honestly,” when asked about the implications of playing under his father’s name.
There’s no denying the salacious comparisons between their respective careers. Harrison Jr.’s early performances mirror those of his father’s rookie year, who achieved 64 catches for 836 yards and eight touchdowns. As Harrison Jr. writes his own professional story, he aspires to accomplish at least as much as his daddy did—maybe more.
“But just how the way the world’s been working so far. Hopefully have the same career.” – Marvin Harrison Jr.
The Arizona Cardinals are preparing to host the Indianapolis Colts this weekend. Harrison Jr. is poised to do the same on the pro gridiron. He further remarked that this particular matchup will certainly be “a special game for me.” It is personally meaningful, and it underscores the cruel irony of having to compete with a team of such strong familial connections.
