Marvin Harrison Jr., the promising wide receiver for the Arizona Cardinals, has made significant strides this offseason, bulking up to 220 pounds. This increase from his rookie weight of 209 pounds is part of a dedicated effort to enhance his performance on the field. Harrison aims to maintain this weight throughout the season as he prepares to take on new challenges in his second year.
In order to reach his goal weight, Harrison decided to be extremely disciplined about his diet and workout schedule. He added to his meal intake, prioritizing a “huge breakfast,” eating the most in the morning, which was hard at first. As Harrison noted, it does take an adjustment period for those first few weeks. He added, “I would argue that anything during that window moves you toward acceptance.” And he’s on board with the changes. He’s “a lot more relaxed” this year, which calms some of those rookie-year jitters and fidgetiness that plagued him as a first-year player.
One thing coaching staff, especially Head Coach Jonathan Gannon, have really touted is this idea of players getting better every day and that applies to every player. Gannon reiterated this approach, stating, “Get better every day. Get better every day. Work your craft. Get better every day.” Harrison has clearly internalized this message, laying out his clearly articulated commitment to be better every day, to work hard every day.
Harrison’s offseason work clearly impressed his teammates. Tight end Trey McBride humorously remarked that Harrison is “lifting more weights than him,” highlighting the noticeable changes in Harrison’s physique. McBride went on to praise Harrison’s work ethic, telling Davis, “No, he’s a diligent worker, bro. There’s no doubt about it. He definitely puts the work in every day… He’s a good player, when he’s able to be the force to be reckoned.”
The social media frenzy about the Cardinals has reached a new level in recent days, especially with team photos featuring Harrison in uniform. His increasingly confident play and improved physicality have sparked the imagination of fans and analysts interested in the future of the franchise.
As soon as he locked in that weight after the Cardinals’ first training camp practice, it sounded like Harrison was pretty happy with his getting there. To which he responded, “I feel awesome! I mean, I feel exactly the same. Even after bulking up physically, he remains sharp and measured—mentally and physically—as he gears up for the 2023 season.
