Marquez Valdes-Scantling officially signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers! This big move reunites him with former Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Valdes-Scantling was released by the SF 49ers last month after reaching an injury settlement. Right after that trade deadline, he was signed to the Pittsburgh Steelers’ practice squad. Gentry makes his way to Pittsburgh after two seasons on the practice squad with the Kansas City Chiefs. Prior to that, he spent a short three years with the Buffalo Bills.
Valdes-Scantling and Rodgers had have a pretty special connection. They celebrated life together on and off the field during their four successful seasons together in Green Bay from 2018 to 2021. During their time as teammates, Valdes-Scantling caught 13 touchdown passes from Rodgers and led the league with an impressive average of 20.9 yards per reception in 2020. On the ground, he punched in a career-high six touchdowns that season as well.
Apparently, Valdes-Scantling’s decision to sign with the Steelers was impacted by Rodgers. The wide receiver had initially considered signing with the 49ers during the preseason but ultimately chose San Francisco due to the familiarity of Klay Kubiak’s offensive system, which resembled that of his brother Klint’s in New Orleans. After his stint with the 49ers, Valdes-Scantling found himself on the road to Pittsburgh. Catty-corner to Rodgers’ office in the Steelers’ practice facility, though, is Austin’s new gig.
Acquiring Valdes-Scantling is a notable improvement to the Steelers receiving corps. Making this move would be in the best interest of both him and Rodgers. The two developed a close relationship with Valdes-Scantling often lauding Rodgers for his influence in shaping the trajectory of his career.
“We built a great rapport over the four years that we got to play together, and he’s one of my closest friends in this NFL thing that I’ve ever made,” – Marquez Valdes-Scantling.
Last year was the first season that Valdes-Scantling really found himself after being a raw receiver with the New Orleans Saints. Through eight games, he had already scored four touchdowns! He’s looking forward to taking his bite out of crime against the Steelers. They’re now getting ready for their next high profile matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers this Sunday.
The timing of Valdes-Scantling’s arrival, both on and off the field, couldn’t be better for the Steelers as they attempt to strengthen their offensive approach. His speed and ability to stretch the field will work perfectly with the vibrant young talent already on the roster.
“He’s taught me a lot, so just being able to be around him again and get some more knowledge four years later, I’m excited about it,” – Marquez Valdes-Scantling.
