Marnus Labuschagne, as usual, proved his immense batting talent. On the second day of Queensland’s most recent Sheffield Shield match against South Australia, he chalked up a powerful 159 runs. It was the 31-year-old cricketer’s incredible performance that proved his secret weapon worth as a key player in domestic cricket. His terrific form has led to discussions of him being recalled ahead of this winter’s Ashes series.
Labuschagne’s form in recent times has been nothing short of amazing. Having accomplished this feat, he has put together an historic stretch of four centuries in only five innings. This now includes a recent 130 and 105 in Australia’s domestic 50-over competition. He always turns opportunities into big production. This remarkable talent has recently piqued the interest of national selectors looking to bolster the struggling Test squad.
To go along with his most recent century, Labuschagne made 160 in the last full round of red-ball cricket. This streak of high scores only serves to underscore his preparedness for the international stage. He’s hit a phenomenal 11 tons in only 58 Test matches. Equally as significant as this impressive title is Peters’ proven talent to perform under pressure against elite-level foes.
After being dropped from Australia’s three-Test series against the West Indies this summer, Labuschagne’s recent performances raise questions about his exclusion. Yet, he had adverse conditions to face in the inaugural World Test Championship final against South Africa. In his two innings batting in the opening position, he scored 17 runs and 22 runs. Since then he’s been back on his by now well worn number three jersey for Queensland. There, though, he appears to be getting his groove back.
Selectors will be watching Labuschagne’s every move as they look to finalise the squad to face the mighty Ashes horde. His recent form suggests that he could be a valuable asset to the Australian team, especially given his ability to score runs consistently across formats.
