Mark Murphy’s Impact on the Packers as He Passes the Torch to Ed Policy

Mark Murphy, the president and chief executive of the Green Bay Packers, will make it official. He’s planning to do just that at the company’s July 25 shareholders meeting. Murphy’s tenure, which began on December 3, 2007, has been marked by significant achievements and challenges, including a Super Bowl victory, multiple quarterback transitions, and a notable restructuring of the organization’s leadership.

Under Murphy’s stewardship, the Packers enjoyed a Super Bowl-winning season in 2010. This victory guaranteed their legacy in National Football League (NFL) history. Looking back on it all, his leadership during this transitional period is remembered for the most part as a major turning point for the franchise. Murphy oversaw two crucial quarterback transitions: first, transitioning from Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers and then from Rodgers to Jordan Love in 2023. These new changes brought challenges of their own. This was particularly the case when Favre announced his retirement in early 2008, only to reverse course later that summer.

Murphy’s decision-making extended beyond player transitions. Possibly his most important decision was to take direct control over both the GM and HC positions. This decision was made as a way to improve internal communication among the organization. In 2018, he brought in Brian Gutekunst to be general manager. This important decision represented an important philosophical leap for the team’s leadership, intending to produce a positive and collaborative workspace.

Throughout his tenure, Murphy faced various challenges. He got into the firing and hiring of head coaches – including the circumstances that led to Mike McCarthy’s departure. McCarthy was candid about the difficulties during that period, stating, “It couldn’t have been handled any worse.”

Murphy’s extensive background in college sports proved to be a transformative force in helping to guide the Packers. Most recently, prior to joining the Coalition, he was the AD at Colgate University. At one point he contributed to the national and international cause by leading a players’ strike there in 1982. This experience prepared him to be the kind of navigator needed through often stormy seas of NFL leadership and intense waters of player management relations.

In addition to his management decisions, Murphy presided over significant events that enhanced the Packers’ visibility and engagement with fans. To that end, he managed the NFL draft conducted in the parking lot of Lambeau Field. Overstaging this expansive free event over three days, it welcomed an astounding attendance of over 600,000 enthusiastic people.

Looking back on his tenure with the Packers, Murphy is still mostly optimistic even amid the storms. “So, you know, on balance, not too many regrets,” he said. He expressed confidence in the current leadership team, saying, “We were close many times, and I am confident that they will break through and win a Super Bowl in the not-too-distant future.”

Murphy’s tenure will end in the year he turns the Packers’ board members’ mandatory retirement age of 70. His contributions to the sports world have earned him recognition and respect from numerous big-name players. Jed York, owner of the San Francisco 49ers, remarked on Murphy’s ability to integrate into an established organization and navigate challenging circumstances. “To bring someone in from the outside, who was able to fit in and made the Packers even more successful… there aren’t many people who could’ve done it better than Mark,” York commented.

As he gets ready to pass the torch to Ed Policy, Murphy looks back on his ride. At present, he is overwhelmed with a powerful cocktail of pride and humility. The only reason I went into management…” he said, underscoring his philosophy in leadership forged by his own experience.
