The 39-year-old head coach of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Freeman will be back at the helm next year. At least until 2026, because his contract is fully guaranteed. Freeman’s leadership helped the Irish reach the College Football Playoff National Championship game last January. His success was punctuated with a blistering ten in a row regular season wins leading them to a No. 2 regular season finish within the final CSFL standings.
That’s because Freeman’s coaching ability turned heads across the country, as numerous NFL franchises circled him like vultures. Teams such as the Atlanta Falcons, Arizona Cardinals, Cleveland Browns, Las Vegas Raiders, Miami Dolphins, and Tennessee Titans expressed interest in hiring him for their head coaching positions. Freeman was recently mentioned as a potential candidate to join the New York Giants. Now, the team is reportedly interested in former Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh to take their place.
Understanding that they could soon be without their head coach, Notre Dame moved quickly to keep Freeman in the fold. The university sweetened his contract last month as a show of good faith in their promise to keep him anchored to their up-and-coming program. Yet Notre Dame officials weren’t blind to the growing lure from the NFL. They promised to do whatever it took to keep Freeman in power.
Freeman’s cultural impact on the team has become a widely reported story. Pete Bevacqua, a central player in Notre Dame’s national search Pete Sports Illustrated declared the university had the country’s best coach, bar none. To underscore his point, he added “full stop.” This endorsement is a sign of the confidence and support Freeman has already earned from those who have been in the program.
During his tenure at Notre Dame, he saw unprecedented success right away on the field. His outspoken nature has made him one of the most important figures in college football. As he prepares for the next recruiting season, Freeman continues to prove his loyalty to the Fighting Irish. His commitment is a sign of his desire to build upon an already strong legacy.
