Manchester United’s Home Woes Continue as Amorim Faces Criticism

Manchester United suffered a surprising 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace at Old Trafford, marking their fifth league loss in seven home matches. This result places manager Ruben Amorim in an unenviable position, as he becomes the quickest manager in the club's Premier League history to reach such a number of home defeats. The loss came under peculiar circumstances, as Amorim's decision to deploy midfielder Kobbie Mainoo as a makeshift centre-forward left fans and pundits questioning his tactical choices.

Ruben Amorim, the 39-year-old manager of Manchester United, has faced scrutiny for his unorthodox team selection against Crystal Palace. The decision to leave recognised strikers Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee on the bench baffled many and ultimately contributed to the team's struggles in front of goal. Crystal Palace's forward, Jean-Philippe Mateta, capitalised on United's missteps, scoring both goals in the 2-0 victory.

United's latest setback follows a series of three successive wins against Rangers, Fulham, and Steaua Bucharest. However, Amorim's experiment with Mainoo up top seems to have backfired, providing Palace with the confidence needed to secure the win. Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville weighed in on the decision-making process that led to this defeat.

"They are sharp and they chip in with goals, but they're not rapid quick and there's no real goalscorers there, so as a defender I'm thinking: 'We've got a chance.'"

Neville highlighted that Amorim's selection afforded Palace a physical advantage in attack, something he believes was a crucial mistake by the manager.

"I'm not saying that if they saw Rasmus Hojlund up front all of a sudden they'd be starting to panic but they'd be thinking at least they've got a physical presence and they've got a battle. Joshua Zirkzee is a big lad."

The absence of a traditional striker left United's attack looking toothless and predictable. Neville expressed that this approach made it easier for Palace's defense to handle their offensive threats.

"I'm not saying they're brilliant players, but I just felt that when I saw that team I thought Crystal Palace would be fancying it."

Amorim's tactical decisions have not only been questioned by former players but also raise concerns regarding his adaptation to Premier League football. The manager's reluctance to utilise available players to their strengths continues to draw criticism.

"He's got to simplify it a little bit. While he might not like Hojlund, he might not think Zirkzee is great and might not like other players, he's got to pick the players that he has and stick with them."

Neville further analysed Amorim's tactics, pointing out the inefficacy of deploying Mainoo in a centre-forward role.

"I thought Bruno Fernandes was going to play in that position or Alejandro Garnacho might play up front and Fernandes to the right; when I saw Mainoo as a centre-forward or dropping in to that position, I thought it's okay, you'll get control in the game and you can get decent football. And it can con you, it can kid you."

Ultimately, Manchester United's inability to convert opportunities into goals remains a significant issue. The need for players who can execute in key moments is ever apparent.

"It's about putting the ball in the back of the net, it's about getting bodies in the box, it's about getting bodies across defenders and making sure that you're really creating chances and that's not going to happen that much with Mainoo up front as everything has to be perfect."

The defeat also cast a shadow over Manchester United’s January transfer window activity—or lack thereof. The club concluded the window without any moves on Deadline Day, adding only Lecce full-back Patrick Dorgu to their ranks earlier in the month. This inactivity in the transfer market could further complicate Amorim's task of reviving the team's fortunes.

Adding to United's woes, Lisandro Martinez exited late in the match with a concerning knee injury. His potential absence would pose additional challenges for Amorim as he navigates a series of pivotal fixtures ahead. Manchester United's upcoming games include encounters with Leicester (H), Tottenham Hotspur (A), Everton (A), Ipswich (H), Arsenal (H), and another meeting with Leicester (A).
