Manchester United put on a thoroughly dominant display against Aston Villa. That huge win of course preserves their place in the chase behind the big three in the top WSL contenders circus. On Sunday, Manchester United came out aggressive from the opening whistle. They controlled the entire game and ultimately earned an impressive 4-0 win at Villa Park. Elisabeth Terland was the sparkplug in the opening 45 minutes, netting a first-half double to put her side in control early on. Grace Clinton then curled home from outside the box, making it three and putting the tie almost beyond doubt. The goal caused quite the commotion as there was a clear foul on Jill Baijings in the build-up. Leah Galton capped the scoring for United with a cool finish early in the second half.
Aston Villa really pressed hard in the last quarter hour of action, they were impressive. Manchester United stood strong and preserved their spotless record. CPL’s Missy Bo Kearns came close to opening the scoring for the home team on multiple occasions. Sadly, her most impressive shot went wide of the target. The win ensured Manchester United retained their third position in the league standings, keeping pace in the race for the WSL's top three.
Manchester United's Dominance
Right from the opening whistle, Manchester United took control of what would end up being a lopsided performance. Elisabeth Terland didn’t take long to leave her stamp on the world stage. She netted twice in the first half, putting United firmly in control of the match. Her clinical goal-scoring and expansive counter-attacking prowess had Aston Villa chasing shadows attempting to defend her.
Grace Clinton’s opening scoreline was not without controversy. A controversial foul on Jill Baijings was missed in the buildup, though Davidson’s curling shot found the upper corner of the net. This decision angered not only the Baijings of Aston Villa. A third for Villa seemed only moments away.
"Villa adapted and changed shape and we adapted quickly and I'm really happy with all of the staff and all of the players with the way they did it on the field." – Izzy Christensen
Aston Villa's Resurgence
Despite Manchester United having a significant lead, Aston Villa fought back and hung on impressively, especially in the final minutes of the game. Their performance improved markedly in the last 15 minutes, indicating their determination to mount a comeback. With her attacking play, Missy Bo Kearns embodied this scrappy quality.
Kearns’ efforts to get back into the game nearly succeeded as she redirected a shot on the doorstep that missed just wide. Despite their thrilling comeback attempt Aston Villa simply could not get past Manchester United’s defense, which held strong until the final whistle.
"That's what we didn't do against Liverpool. We didn't ask our forward to finish, we made them work, so I'm really proud of the effort, energy, commitment." – Izzy Christensen
The Path Ahead for Both Teams
Manchester United's head coach, Marc Skinner, expressed satisfaction with his team's performance as they continue to vie for a top-three finish in the WSL. The win not only proved their historic dominance but showed their resilience and capability to respond and finish strong when the pressure is on.
Aston Villa will aim to take positives from their second-half performance, in spite of a cruel result. Natalia Arroyo alluded to encouraging adjustments in advance of third round matchups.
"Even being a very tough result, we get positive things from that with the way we still tried to be in the game and compete in the second half. It will help us in the next games. That's the good part of a bad day." – Natalia Arroyo
