In one of the biggest upsets of the Premier League season so far, Manchester United lost 1-0 to Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday. The loss came despite Everton playing with ten men for the majority of the match after Idrissa Gueye received a red card. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s lone goal secured the victory for the hosts, leaving Manchester United’s manager Ruben Amorim searching for answers.
The game happened under plenty of hype and excitement around Manchester United, who started out with one of their most powerful lineups. They featured Senne Lammens, Yoro, De Ligt, Shaw, Mazraoui, Casemiro, Fernandes, Dorgu, Amad, Zirkzee, and Mbeumo. On the other hand, Everton’s team featured goalkeeper Jordan Pickford alongside defenders Seamus Coleman, James Tarkowski, Michael Keane, Vitalii Mykolenko, and midfielders Gueye, Garner, Dewsbury-Hall, along with forwards Ismaïla Sarr and Jack Grealish.
A Disappointing Performance by Manchester United
Manchester United came into the match looking to find some continued form but within minutes they were left searching for a way past the bottom-placed Everton backline. Despite dominating in possession and generating a myriad of scoring chances, they couldn’t turn a single one into a goal. Both Mason Mount and Bryan Mbeumo had great chances to put their teams on the board but missed the mark.
With the exception of Joshua Zirkzee’s five months out injured, this wasn’t a particularly notable return. He displayed his talent and drew Pickford into two stunning saves in the game. As much as he was able to dazzle with his talents, the result was still the same.
That’s when Manchester United’s failure to take advantage of their opportunities started to stick out like a sore thumb. They had full 11 on the field for the full 90 minutes. Even with that, they found it hard to penetrate an organized Everton defensive block.
Everton’s Resilience Despite Red Card
The game changed dramatically through the first half. Idrissa Gueye was red carded for punching his own player, Michael Keane. This freak occurrence would leave Everton with just ten men for the subsequent 75 minutes. Even with 10 men, Everton put forth a strong effort and tactical discipline.
His manager David Moyes changed his approach to make up for the lack of bodies. Though they were on the back foot, the team zeroed in on tightening their defense and creating openings in the counter-attack. And that approach paid off dramatically! Then Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall scored the winner in the 65th minute, latching onto a rare defensive mistake from Manchester United.
Dewsbury-Hall’s performance earned him the Player of the Match award, reflecting his critical role in Everton’s victory. Alas, Phillips would score the decisive goal. Plus, he put in an impactful midfield controlling performance versus a much stronger Manchester United team.
Missed Opportunities and Future Challenges for Manchester United
Before an anemic Theatre of Dreams crowd, the ManUre players headed from the field to contemplate what might have been. The undermanned opponent was supposed to give the team a chance to rebound, but fell flat on delivering that advantage. Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim was visibly upset in his post-match media availability. He insisted that his team needed to learn from this mistake so they don’t repeat the same mistakes in the future.
The loss creates serious crisis for Manchester United as they prepare to face their next matches. With their next match almost upon them, it is absolutely essential that the team rallies and rediscovers their composure. The team needs to address their issues in the final third. They would have to increase their dismal showings across the board to reverse their current trajectory.
