Manchester United Faces Record-Breaking Struggles Under Ruben Amorim

Ruben Amorim’s time as the gaffer of Manchester United has turned into the worst period in the club’s history. This season, the defense has been more permeable than it’s ever been. It’s the most goals conceded in a top-flight season since Sir Alex Ferguson retired 12 years ago. Under Amorim’s stewardship, the group has set a new marker. Worse still, they’ve established the record for fewest Premier League wins in that time. Yet Manchester United has found itself on the receiving end of too many underwhelming performances this season. Consequently, they’re now headed to a record low points total and for the most losses ever in Premier League history.

Amorim’s management statistics reveal a troubling trend. He has lost 11 of the 22 Premier League games he’s been in charge since his arrival. This record speaks for itself with the monumental obstacles he has overcome. The expansion side has struggled mightily on the back line, conceding more than 1.5 goals per contest. This worrying trend has even surpassed the shambolic record of Ralf Rangnick’s brief reign in 2022. These numbers paint the picture of a broken team, suffering under the weight of on-field and off-field woes.

Defensive Woes and Historical Low Points

Despite Manchester United coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer improving countless areas across the pitch, his side’s defensive frailties are predominant to this day. Their goal difference has plummeted to a level they’ve not seen since before Ferguson took charge, highlighting the wide nature of this crisis. This grim statistic looks even worse when you factor in that they’ve already endured eight home losses this season. It is the joint most defeats at Old Trafford in a domestic league season since the 1962/63 campaign.

This season, Manchester United are heading towards a historic low points total for the club in Premier League history. It’s a watershed moment in the City’s history. It illustrates a failure of stout defensive execution. It exemplifies the lack of wins achieved in securing wins where it matters most, particularly at home. The ramifications of these defeats go far past the pitch, threatening the club’s future participation in, and ability to compete in domestic and international competitions.

Scoring Struggles and Key Player Absences

On top of their defensive problems, Manchester United have scored a troubling amount in attack. Indeed, Braga have been underwhelming in front of goal in nine of Amorim’s 22 league games in charge. This should make everyone question their offensive input tremendously. Rasmus Hojlund, who has started 31 games this season as the primary striker, has only managed to net six goals. His struggles only further illustrate the failure Amorim has found in getting the most out of his best players.

Midfielder Casemiro’s absence from the lineup has further exacerbated United’s problems. Aside from that, their record of wins when he’s not in the starting XI is pretty damn bad. They have not won in their past six league games without him. This number could just as easily reflect how much he’s needed to bring balance and control to a chaotic midfield. While at Sporting CP, Casemiro lost much less. This points to one of the most profound contrasts in team culture across the two experiences.

A Disappointing Future Ahead

As the season continues, Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United looks to be heading for a record low. They are on course for their highest ever total of defeats since entering the Premier League. Since Amorim’s appointment, it’s goal difference that has them ranked fifth worst. They’ve actually conceded two more than Tottenham Hotspur over this stretch.

Under Amorim, Bruno Fernandes emerged as the only player ever to finish in the Premier League’s top 50 ranking for Expected Goals. This serves to underscore the poor contributions from the rest of the roster. Those numbers paint a stark picture of Manchester United’s current state. Without massive improvements in tactics and/or execution from the players, time looks to be running out on their championship hopes.
