Manchester City were dealt a significant blow to their hopes of finishing in the top-three of the Women’s Super League (WSL). In their most recent outing, they were surprised and held to a 1-1 home draw by Everton. The loss dealt City a huge blow in the Hub standings. That was a very telling moment for the team because they missed the opportunity to pounce when Manchester United lost points against West Ham. With just three matches left on the schedule, City is suddenly seven points adrift of their rivals.
Casparij illustrated passion when she celebrated the draw with fervor. He wore, with evident pride, a City shirt bearing the name of Mary Fowler – the latest WSL star to come up against the scourge of cruciate ligament tears. This unfortunate event adds to the challenges facing Nick Cushing’s side as they navigate the final stretch of the season.
In their most recent game against Everton, Manchester City struggled the entire match to get into a groove. Their attempts were enough to fill a draw at best. On the other side of town, Aston Villa pulled off a stunning comeback 3-2 win against Tottenham Hotspur. Kirsty Hanson was the hero for Villa, as she netted an injury-time winner to seal a pulsating contest.
The game produced an exciting see-sawing contest as Tottenham took the early lead. Karen Holmgaard stopped home off a cross from her identical twin sister, Sara, to provide Spurs with a quick strike and early lead. Villa made a spirited return. Anna Patten scored her 26th birthday goal to put England in front and two-time champion Hanson added a late third to secure the win.
Tottenham got it right! Goals from Ella Morris and Jessica Naz kept the hosts in the game and on level terms for most of the match. Although they performed admirably, it wasn’t to be for them, allowing Villa to enjoy a deserved victory at Brisbane Road.
As FC Manchester City looks to figure out where it stands in this ever-changing league, this squad needs to get it together fast. Their ambitions for European qualification are by a thread. The recent injury to Fowler hasn’t helped and has only intensified their struggles. On the flip side, Cushing’s side has some key fixtures coming up. They are intent on not only getting back on track, but improving upon a disappointing league finish last season.
