Manchester City won, beating Nottingham Forest 2-0 at Wembley Stadium. This victory returns them to the FA Cup final for the third year in a row! The semi-final did not flatter Manchester City, their depth and experience was on full display. They clearly dictated the pace and played chess while their opponents were stuck playing checkers.
Yet Kevin De Bruyne started the match on the bench, a shock tactical choice by City’s manager, Pep Guardiola. The team saw Rico Lewis, Savinho, and Jack Grealish brought into the starting lineup, demonstrating Guardiola’s confidence in younger players alongside seasoned veterans. Lewis, especially, took the game by storm, taking home the Player of the Match award for his efforts.
Manchester City’s lineup featured goalkeeper Stefan Ortega and defenders Ruben Dias, Josko Gvardiol, and O’Reilly, with Mateo Kovacic and Bernardo Silva in midfield. The supporting cast for the attacking front three of Savinho, Grealish, and striker Anass Marmoush was just as impressive.
In a match where Nottingham Forest struggled to make their mark, they only managed one touch in Manchester City’s penalty area. The Championship play-off winners, inspired and organized by coach and former City player Nuno Espirito Santo, were not cowed by their opponents. For Forest, it was just the third appearance of the season for Zach Abbott, making Callum Hudson-Odoi an immediate starter in place of the injured Anthony Elanga. When Morgan Gibbs-White wasn’t hitting the bar, he was clipping the top of the post. Nottingham Forest just couldn’t take advantage on their end.
The initial equalizer was an incredible header from Josko Gvardiol in the second half. He scored another one with a blistering header. This one to make Manchester City’s lead 2-0. This goal sealed City’s lead but it was a demonstration of just how dangerous the City team is in a set-piece situation. Before Gvardiol even scored, City were up 1-0, an indication as to just how much they bossed the entire match.
Nottingham Forest’s Taiwo Awoniyi came close with an instinctive flick that hit the post. Overall, they struggled to maintain possession or create meaningful threats. The team’s failure to shoot was dramatically illustrated by the fact that the team ended the match without a single shot on net.
Guardiola recognised the threats Nottingham Forest posed but said he was proud of his team’s overall performance.
“Of course we are lucky we cannot deny that, they had chances. But apart from the actions they had, the game in general was really good play. Really pleased to be in the final again.” – Pep Guardiola
Manchester City cruised into a third successive FA Cup final. They called on their big-game experience to see through what might have been a tricky first-round tie. Ilkay Gundogan, Jeremy Doku, Phil Foden and Gonzalez were all attacking substitutes. This showcase, corroborated by extensive tracking data, further illustrates the stunning depth of talent that’s at Guardiola’s disposal.
