Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, whose December 16, 2025 successful surgery was performed in Dallas. The complicated procedure, featured in-depth on the BBC, repaired a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee. Dr. Dan Cooper, known as head team physician for the Dallas Cowboys, did the surgery. This represents a major milestone in Mahomes’ return from an injury he suffered on a quarterback sneak late in last week’s game against the Broncos.
Mahomes hurt himself with under two minutes remaining in a highly-contested matchup against divisional foe Los Angeles Chargers. The Chiefs would go on to lose the game anyway, 16-13. The defeat not only dashed the team’s playoff aspirations but raised concerns regarding Mahomes’ availability for the upcoming season.
Generally, the rehabilitation process after an ACL tear takes around nine months. As a result, Mahomes won’t take part in the Chiefs’ offseason program. This further calls into question his readiness for the beginning of the 2026 NFL season. The 2023 season opener on September 10 will bring a new set of rookie driving talent to Music City. Fans can’t wait to hear whether their star new quarterback will be playing!
In light of Mahomes’ situation, former NFL quarterback Tom Brady shared insights from his own experience rehabbing a torn ACL. Brady had a comparable injury back in ‘08 when he was 31 years old. He said the key is to be vigilant during every step of the rehab.
“You’ve just got to put as much diligence into the rehab process,” – Tom Brady
Brady stressed that effective recovery requires total engagement. He likened this commitment to the laser-like determination that only the top professional athletes have in their pursuit of excellence.
“But that requires an all-out commitment and it’s the same commitment that the great professional athletes make to be great at their profession. When you go through the rehab process, you need that same level of focus and determination. It’s a tough rehab. It’s one of the toughest rehabs.” – Tom Brady
Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid showed no doubt that Mahomes would approach the rehab with the same ferocity.
“He’ll attack it, just like he does everything else,” – Andy Reid
Mahomes is just beginning a long road back. We have every confidence he will address rehabilitation with the diligence and purpose that have marked his life’s work. There’s the troubling trend of Mahomes taking a toll this season. Allied fans and teammates alike are excitedly looking forward to his return to form.
