Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes recently hosted aspiring NFL passers at his home state of Texas’ premier quarterback school. He worked extensively with the team’s running backs and wide receivers throughout the camp. That’s all in an effort this initiative seems designed to do to boost the team’s offensive production heading into the 2024 season.
Last year, Mahomes was working with one hand tied behind his back as injuries hampered the contributions of three key players. With Rashee Rice and Hollywood Brown both missing a ton of time, that rookie Xavier Worthy had to step up in their absence. Even with these struggles, Mahomes has not lost sight of the promise his receiving corps offers.
“I think the offense has a chance to be really, really good,” Mahomes expressed, highlighting his confidence in the team’s future performance. Rashee Rice exploded to start last season. He was leading the NFL with 24 catches through three games when a knee injury put him out for the rest of the season. Mahomes is certainly wishing for things to come together for Rice, who can do plenty this season if it all clicks.
Mahomes might be just as excited to see Hollywood Brown back in action though. Brown’s sternoclavicular injury on the first play of the preseason cut deep into his availability. He just finished playing in two regular-season games and all three playoff games. Mahomes believes that with a full offseason and training camp, Brown can further expand his role within the offense.
“I know it was unfortunate how he got hurt last year, it was so early in the season that he’s going to get pretty much a complete offseason, which I think will be big going into this season,” Mahomes noted. This feeling certainly echoes the general optimism over Brown’s strong recovery and ability to make an impact.
With a healthy Rice and an active Brown again soon, that will change. Along with their support, Mahomes prepared to further fortify his core group of receivers, particularly adding Xavier Worthy who was a notable deep threat last year. The Chiefs’ depth chart is headlined by their trio of speedy wideouts. That combination gives Mahomes a ton of flexibility to run an explosive aerial assault, as he has in years past.
“Everything looks great right now getting the guys back and healthy,” Mahomes added, emphasizing his enthusiasm for the upcoming season. With training camp just weeks away, he is most immediately tasked with honing the team’s offensive identity and sparking a new iteration of their previously explosive passing attack.
