Madison Keys etched her name in tennis history on Saturday by clinching her first grand slam title at the Australian Open. In a gripping final, she overcame Aryna Sabalenka, the world No. 1 and two-time defending champion, with a scoreline of 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. The triumph not only marked Keys' inaugural grand slam victory but also made her the first woman since Serena Williams in 2005 to defeat the top-ranked player in a grand slam final.
The match, held at Melbourne Park, saw Keys display nerves of steel, particularly in the decisive third set. With the scores tied at 5-5, Keys summoned an extra burst of energy to produce two forehand winners, holding her serve to lead 6-5. She then broke Sabalenka's serve at 7-5 to secure the historic win. This performance left Sabalenka stunned, leading her to smash her racket in frustration before regaining composure to congratulate Keys.
"I have wanted this for so long and I have been in one other grand slam final. It did not go my way and I didn’t know if I was ever going to be able to get back to this position to try to win a trophy again," – Madison Keys
Keys' journey to this monumental victory has been marked by resilience and perseverance. Her previous best was reaching the 2017 US Open final and advancing to four major semifinals. Despite these accomplishments, Keys had not fulfilled the potential many expected from her until this golden day in Melbourne.
Throughout the match, Keys exhibited an immaculate serve and powerful groundstrokes, taking command early by winning the first set 6-3. However, Sabalenka rallied in the second set, breaking Keys twice to level the match with a 6-2 victory. Yet, it was Keys who found an extra gear in the final set, ultimately prevailing in a closely contested battle.
"As always, that’s your fault guys! I don’t want to see you for the next week – I really hate you! Thank you so much for everything and blah, blah blah." – Aryna Sabalenka
The victory was not only significant for Keys personally but also served as a testament to her growth and tenacity as a player. Once hailed as a prodigy destined for grand slam success, Keys finally fulfilled those early expectations with this landmark win. Her coach and husband, Bjorn Fratangelo, were among those she celebrated with on the court after raising her arms to the sky in jubilation.
Sabalenka, gracious in defeat, acknowledged Keys' outstanding performance.
"I think we did our best, just Madison was doing incredible and I couldn’t do anything in this match. Next time I play Madison I will bring better tennis. Of course, sending love to my team. I love you even though we lost." – Aryna Sabalenka
The match captivated audiences with its intensity and showcased two of the sport's top competitors at their best. Despite the loss, Sabalenka's sportsmanship shone through as she congratulated Keys on her remarkable achievement.
