Luka Doncic Signs Historic Extension with Lakers

Luka Doncic has signed a three-year extension with the Los Angeles Lakers that is worth $165 million. This extension further solidifies his status as a cornerstone of the franchise. Doncic’s extension is only a continuation of what he’s done since arriving in LA. He wasted no time in making an enormous impact both on and off the court. This extension illustrates Doncic’s historic value to the franchise. It gives him the option to opt out following 2028, giving him the chance to sign a new deal estimated at five years and $417 million, which is 35% of the salary cap.

Doncic’s transition to the Lakers has been nothing short of seamless since his debut on February 10. He finished the season leading the team in points, rebounds, assists, steals, and three-pointers per game, further highlighting his versatility and all-around game. Doncic proved all of that last season, as he averaged 28.2 points, 8.2 rebounds and 7.7 assists. Casey only suited up for 50 games, a career low with the Mavericks and Lakers. In 2024, he had the greatest playoff run in World Series history. He became the first player in NBA history to lead the playoffs in points, rebounds, assists and steals on his way to firmly establishing himself as one of professional basketball’s MVP canonized.

The Lakers’ creation of a genuine bond with Doncic has proven a key element in Los Angeles’ whole offseason approach. General Manager Rob Pelinka praised Doncic as “one of the game’s most transcendent players,” emphasizing his ability to elevate the team. In their media availability Doncic’s leadership was credited as playing a big role in acquiring Deandre Ayton and most recently Marcus Smart. Doncic has been the driving force behind recruiting Smart, including several phone calls while on family and Mavs business overseas.

Beyond his talent and dominant play on the court, Doncic has had a huge positive influence on the community. Praising Doncic’s competitiveness, Pelinka noted that Luka is equally known for his love of people and concern for others. Doncic reciprocated the appreciation, stating, “I’m really grateful to the Lakers organization, my teammates and the fans for welcoming me and my family with so much support and kindness since day one.”

The hope is that they can recreate some of that synergy moving forward, then lead the Lakers to better days. He expressed his commitment to working hard for another championship, stating, “This is an amazing organization, and I truly believe in what we’re building together. I’m going to keep working as hard as I can to bring another championship to Los Angeles and to make Laker Nation proud.”

Doncic recently revealed what he hopes the team’s future looks like in an interview with Men’s Health. He opened up about the drastic changes he’s made to his body and conditioning. His dedication to fitness is undoubtedly aimed at maximizing his performance as he leads the Lakers in pursuit of future championships.

Doncic has an incredible history. He is on the verge of being just the fifth player in franchise history to average 30 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 dimes in a playoff series. His commitment to excellence is evident as he stated, “This is just the beginning. I’m excited for what’s ahead and to keep building something special with this team.”
