Ludvig Åberg emerged victorious at the Genesis Invitational, securing his third worldwide win since turning professional in June 2023. The Swedish golfer delivered an impressive performance with a final score of 12-under 276, earning a prize of $4 million. Held at the renowned Riviera Country Club, the tournament saw Åberg showcasing his exceptional skills and determination. Meanwhile, Scottie Scheffler and Patrick Rodgers tied for third place, with Rory McIlroy and Denny McCarthy also making notable appearances.
Åberg, a former top-ranked college player from Texas Tech, demonstrated remarkable prowess throughout the tournament. His final round was particularly noteworthy as he closed with a 66, finishing alone in third. He went out with a 31, which included five birdies, narrowing the gap to within one shot of the lead. Åberg’s ability to maintain composure under pressure proved instrumental in clinching the title.
Scottie Scheffler struggled on Saturday, posting a 76—his highest score in nearly three years—which left him five shots behind the lead. Despite this setback, Scheffler managed to tie for third alongside Patrick Rodgers. Rodgers, however, faltered with bogeys on the 11th and 12th holes and could not regain momentum to challenge for the lead.
Rory McIlroy experienced a challenging round as well, unable to capitalize on putting opportunities. At one point, he could only laugh during the round, playing alongside Scheffler on Saturday. McIlroy's performance highlighted the unpredictable nature of the tournament.
Denny McCarthy briefly held the lead after making an eagle on the par-5 sixth hole but failed to secure another birdie until the final hole, ultimately tying for fifth place. His final round concluded with a bogey from the water on the 18th, resulting in a score of 72.
The tournament also saw a poignant moment as Tiger Woods withdrew on Monday due to coping with the recent passing of his mother, Kultida Woods. In tribute, players wore a red button featuring the Thai symbol of love to honor her memory.
"It's more than I could have asked for at the start of the day," said Maverick McNealy, reflecting on the tournament's intensity and outcome.
"This Sunday is a lot more fun than the last one we had," remarked Ludvig Åberg, expressing his satisfaction and relief after securing the victory.
