The Los Angeles Rams have informed star wide receiver Cooper Kupp of their intention to seek a trade immediately. Kupp, a key player for the Rams, expressed his surprise at the decision, emphasizing his dedication to the team. Having spent his entire eight-season career with the Rams, Kupp now faces the possibility of continuing his NFL journey with another franchise.
Cooper Kupp's career began in 2017 when the Rams selected him as a third-round pick out of Eastern Washington. As a 24-year-old rookie, he made an immediate impact with 62 receptions in his debut season. Over the years, Kupp has proven to be a reliable and prolific receiver. He played every game during two seasons, including the 2021 regular season. During his time with the Rams, Kupp participated in 33 games over three seasons, achieving a season high of 812 receiving yards.
Kupp's excellence reached a new height in the 2021 season when he led the NFL in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns. Following this outstanding performance, he signed a three-year contract extension worth $80.1 million. Despite this lucrative contract, his guaranteed salary for the next season is only $5 million, with no guaranteed money in the final year of his contract in 2026.
The Rams' decision to explore trading Kupp appears financially motivated. By trading him in a deal designated post-June 1, they could save $20 million toward their 2025 salary cap. Alternatively, if the team decides to cut him this offseason, they would save $15 million in cash and $7.52 million against the salary cap. These financial considerations come at a time when Kupp's cap hit for next season stands at $29.8 million and $27.3 million in 2026.
Cooper Kupp's remarkable contributions were further highlighted when he won the Super Bowl MVP award in 2022 after the Rams' victory over the Cincinnati Bengals. Despite his accomplishments, Kupp expressed disappointment with the decision to seek a trade.
"I don't agree with the decision and always believed it was going to begin and end in LA" – Cooper Kupp
Kupp remains focused on his career ambitions and is determined to find a new team where he can continue to compete at the highest level.
"find the right place to continue competing for championships" – Cooper Kupp
