It’s official – the Chicago Bulls have executed a trade! To make up for that loss though, they are trading reserve point guard Lonzo Ball to the Cleveland Cavaliers for forward Isaac Okoro. This latest addition comes amid Ball’s yearslong struggle with injuries. These problems have really taken a toll on his production and availability the last few seasons.
In March 2023, Lonzo Ball, 27, underwent what comes down to an experimental procedure. He underwent a meniscus and cartilage transplant—an experimental procedure at the time—in his left knee. He had this procedure after multiple unsuccessful attempts to address an injury suffered during the 2021-22 season. It was a successful first season for him with the Bulls. Since then, Ball has experienced extreme difficulty on the court, making him physically unable to compete at NBA level.
Over the course of 2022-23, Ball only played in 35 games. In his final college season, he averaged 7.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game. His three-point shooting percentage sits at a career-high 35.1%. Even as he developed, he was out since early March with a right wrist sprain, making his return to form that much more difficult.
Clearly, the Bulls want to overhaul their roster slightly enough that making a trade for Ball is worthwhile. They hope to see Okoro provide a new defensive dimension. Okoro’s athleticism, defensive mindset, and ability to play multiple positions will provide Chicago with a valuable foundation piece for the coming transition.
Lonzo Ball’s trade to the Cavaliers opens up promising possibilities for his future after a tumultuous past. He’s intent on putting his injury woes behind him and making an instant impact as a top receiver on his new team. The Cavaliers are pleased to add Ball’s versatile skill set and experience. That’s because they think he’ll deepen their roster as they prepare for the 2024 Paris Olympics and beyond.
