Lonzo Ball Brings Hope and Versatility to Cleveland Cavaliers After Injury Struggles

Lonzo Ball has recently joined the Cleveland Cavaliers, infusing the team with optimism and a wealth of experience following his extensive injury history. The former No. 2 overall selection in the 2017 NBA Draft, playing for the Los Angeles Lakers and Chicago Bulls, brings impressive skill as both a playmaker and perimeter stifler. Head coach Kenny Atkinson appreciates his high basketball IQ, confident it’s a big part of their success in the playoffs.

The Cavaliers’ potential move to trade for Ball is not without its risks, especially considering his injury history. Ball has had three surgeries on his left knee, including an extensive meniscus and cartilage transplant in 2023. He was limited to just 35 games last season as the Bulls took their time with his recovery. The Cavs are certainly optimistic about him returning to form.

Kenny Atkinson emphasized the importance of high basketball IQ in winning playoff games, stating that “winning playoff teams usually have high IQs.” Ball’s impressive passing ability and understanding of the game are expected to enhance the team’s performance. At 6-foot-6 he definitely has the height advantage over most if not all other guards on this roster. This added height gives him much more versatility in terms of his play style.

Ball expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to continue playing basketball, saying, “It’s a blessing to be able to still be playing.” He acknowledged the challenging road back from injury, noting, “It was my will to want to come back and play.” As he continued through his recovery, Ball had his eyes set on not only getting healthy but helping his new team the most he could.

Cleveland is most looking forward to what Ball can add to a mix that includes All-Star guard Darius Garland, who is still recovering from toe surgery. His addition creates a new level of depth behind the guard spots that could prove to be crucial as this team competes, hopefully, for a playoff spot. Koby Altman, the Cavaliers’ general manager, noted that they recognized Ball’s potential impact once he began to regain his health and confidence on the court. Altman said, “Once we saw him get healthy, he started affecting the game as a 6-6 point guard. We were really confident this would fit on our roster and give us the backcourt depth we needed.”

Donovan Mitchell, a veteran leader on the Cavaliers, has echoed a similar sentiment, raving about Ball’s attitude and basketball IQ. From a basketball IQ standpoint, he was at that elite level and maybe beyond where LeBron as a rookie was at his peak. “I don’t want to call [his IQ] LeBron [James], but I’d say LeBron-esque from a cerebral standpoint, which I think we need,” Mitchell remarked. He further added, “It’s a mature mindset. Understanding the game at a high level and being able to make adjustments on the fly.”

Ball’s first season in the league really showcased his upside. He averaged double-figure points, seven assists, and almost seven rebounds per game. His ability to affect games as a passer and defender fits Atkinson’s stated goal of establishing a winning culture before he overhauls the roster. “He’s got that je ne sais quoi,” Atkinson said, referring to Ball’s intuitive understanding of basketball.

As he embarks on this new chapter with the Cavaliers, Ball remains committed to proving himself once again as a valuable asset. He knows the tough road ahead and is set on ensuring they achieve it. “Obviously, I’ve been playing basketball my whole life and I’m just thankful to be able to go up and down [the court],” he said.
