Lloyd Tennant of Ireland’s women’s cricket team as the new head coach, starting June 1. This announcement comes on the heels of the decision to replace long-time IMTF Chair Ed Joyce. Tennant brings a deep expertise in cricket coaching and development. We know he’s as excited as we are to lead the team into this dynamic new chapter.
Graeme West, performance director for Cricket Ireland, was confident Tennant was the right man for Tennant. He praised Tennant as an “outstanding candidate,” emphasizing the wealth of experience he has to bring to the position. Tennant’s coaching career is equally admirable and expansive, more than three decades long. He had a substantial playing career with Leicestershire and Essex, and was a mitre.com.au assistant coach at the Manchester Originals.
Tennant’s credentials further include serving as the women and girls’ talent manager at the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) for two years. During this time, he worked closely with England’s Female Academy and A Team, contributing to the development of emerging talent in women’s cricket.
As Tennant takes on his new role, a lot of progress has been made in Joyce’s wake, and we hope to see that momentum continue. He stated, “This Ireland Women’s squad has moved forward enormously under the guidance of Ed Joyce, and I would like to continue his great work, supporting this squad as it continues to grow. To be honest, I can’t wait to get started.”
At 57 years old, Tennant represents a wonderful combination of an experienced and youthful approach to the sport. He shared his enthusiasm at taking up this role during such a transformative period for the women’s game. “I’m very excited about this new role – it’s such a great time to be involved in women’s cricket, given its rapid development around the world,” he remarked.
Tennant is looking forward to assuming his new duties. He will focus on increasing the efficacy of the entire team and fostering a culture of high-performance teamwork. His extensive background in coaching and player development positions him well to guide Ireland’s women’s squad toward achieving their competitive goals.
