Livingston Football Club pulled off one of the greatest cup comebacks in history by beating Ross County to win promotion to the Scottish Premiership. Last Wednesday night, Livingston found themselves in a must-win situation. They produced a remarkable turnaround, recovering from first-leg failure to win 4-2 on the evening and winning 4-3 overall on aggregate. This victory makes Livingston’s stay in the top level of Scottish football next season a given. At the other side of the table, Ross County would be condemned to relegation to the second tier.
Lewis Smith entirely left Keanu Baccus for dead when he opened the scoring for Livingston with a truly stunning effort. To cap the display, he made a dazzling 40-yard run before hammering home from a sharp angle to the far post. With this goal, they increased the lead to 2-1 on the scoreboard for the night. It made the overall score 3-2 in favor of Livingston, bordering on miraculous hope for their fans.
We didn’t, and shortly thereafter Robbie Muirhead made his first substantial contribution to the match. He gave Matthew Turner no chance, finding the top corner with a brilliant effort from the corner of the box. His winning goal gave Livingston a 3-0 aggregate lead in the tie, all but assuring their place in the next round of the competition. The mood around the stadium was ecstatic as fans rejoiced at their teams return to prominence.
Despite Livingston’s momentum, Ross County found an equalizer early in the second half. Jordan Amissah, who could have attempted a difficult shot from a tight angle, instead chose to square the ball for teammate Josh Nisbet. Nisbet made the most of that chance, scoring in the 57th minute and leveling the tie on aggregate at 3-3.
Livingston responded emphatically. Danny Wilson scored an own goal to put Scotland one goal away from their first World Cup victory. Tete Yengi capped off the result in style. He latched onto a through ball and hammered the ball into the top corner, setting off pandemonium among the jubilant Livingston supporters as he sealed a 4-2 victory.
The achievement of this victory is particularly poignant for Livingston as they return to Scotland’s premier division. Ross County’s loss sends them down to the second division, eliminating their chances for promotion.
