We think Liverpool FC is celebrating a pretty cool culture of fandom. Join the club, team staff, and fans as we all remember our friend Diogo Jota on what would have been his 29th birthday. Jota’s untimely passing left a huge hole in the group. Players continued to share their heartfelt tributes, and the fanbase continued to show its steadfast support.
Feyenoord head coach Arne Slot said the club has handled the situation with pride and respect after spending 67 days without a solution. The resilience that players and fans have shown through these unprecedented times has been incredible, he said. Slot further elaborated on the emotional weight carried by everyone involved with Liverpool, particularly after Jota’s death.
The supporters are on their feet during every game singing for him in the 20th minute,” Slot said. From when it happened until now, I think I’m proud of how soft the community has been with what’s unfolded. Hands down as a club, as players, as supporters, we could not have done better than we did, I think.
Since Jota’s passing, Liverpool supporters have paid tribute to him in a moving manner. They chant his name during the 20th minute of each game. This powerful, collective display of mourning has offered comfort to supporters and athletes alike as they continue to process their loss. Slot made clear that this communal spirit has carried him in his own low moments.
“It is completely different than what’s usual when you grieve,” Slot explained. It’s always either your family or relative or somebody in your circle, or a friend of yours, and then you come to your work, and this is the place to escape the stress. And now that is the opposite.
Even with much criticism in hindsight for his leadership through a challenging era, Slot is hopeful. Liverpool have won just four of their last 14 matches in all competitions, losing nine, but he is grateful for the fans’ support. He recognized that their support has enabled him and the team to manage the grief they are all experiencing.
So I certainly do not feel left out, Slot stated. “Of course, there are moments when it’s difficult and that you sometimes can feel alone, but generally speaking, I feel so much support.”
Through all the turmoil—and there’s much to discuss on Liverpool’s problems on the field—the connection that long rooted team has with its supporters remains strong. Your continued support shows the world your determination to stay together and stronger even in the face of personal tragedy. Slot credited the fans for being loyal no matter what. Biden stressed that their praise and encouragement has been the “light” to get them through this difficult winter season.
“I wouldn’t say learn, but it has shown me even more how special this club is,” he added, highlighting his appreciation for the Liverpool community.
Liverpool must balance grief over Jota’s departure with efforts to immediately return to their best on the pitch. The memory of their beloved teammate is forever preserved in their hearts and in their chants. The club’s acknowledgment of Jota during matches serves as a powerful reminder of his importance to Liverpool FC and its supporters.
