Liverpool Man Charged Following Incident Injuring 79 at Parade

Paul Desmond Sanders Doyle, 53, from West Derby in Liverpool, has been charged with seven other serious offences. These charges would be a welcome development after a tragic incident that left 79 people injured. On Monday, a pedestrian-involved crash occurred on Water Street in downtown city during a local parade. Specifically, Doyle purportedly accelerated his car into a throng of pedestrians on the sidewalk.

Doyle was arrested and charged with multiple serious charges, including two counts of unlawful and malicious wounding with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm. Most violently, he is charged under the law of two counts of this harm for each of them and two counts of attempted grievous bodily harm and one count of dangerous driving. This tragedy has impacted a highly diverse set of victims, who range in age from nine years old to 78 years old.

Of the six victims associated with the charges against Doyle, one is a child. This reality only highlights how dire things truly are. As of Wednesday, over 50 people were still being treated for their injuries at various hospitals. Of those, seven stayed hospitalized, but they are back to stable condition now.

Doyle has been remanded in custody and is next due to appear at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court on Friday, May 30. We will witness a legal process that should reflect the serious nature of the allegations against him as this investigation is still taking shape.

After the incident, local representative Jenny Sims responded by acknowledging the community’s rage, saying,

“I fully understand how this incident has left us all shocked and saddened, and I know many will continue to have concerns and questions.”

The investigation is still in its early stages, said Sarah Hammond, an attorney with the U.S.

“The investigation is at an early stage,” she noted.

This incident has rippled through the community as families and neighbors are forced to contend with the loss of life that occurred. FHWA knows that authorities are working hard and doing their best to get more information and make sure that the right things happen in the future.
