Liverpool FC are going to pay tribute to their late player Diogo Jota this weekend. Tragically, he was killed in a traffic crash with his brother, fellow pro Andre Silva, on July 3. The club aims to pay tribute to Jota’s legacy through various initiatives, including the construction of a memorial at Anfield, the team’s iconic stadium.
As part of those tributes, a fan mosaic will be revealed as well. Further, all Premiers League players and staff will mark the start of the 2020/21 season with a period of silence before the first match against Bournemouth on Aug. 15. This solemn occasion will allow fans and players alike to reflect on Jota’s contributions to the club and the profound impact he had on the Liverpool community.
Liverpool FC has taken an arguably unprecedented stand. At all levels of play, they will retire the No 20 shirt in his honor, permanently. To continue memorializing his legacy, players will wear a ‘Forever 20’ badge on their uniforms during the 2025/26 season. This initiative serves to ensure that Jota’s spirit remains a vital part of the team’s identity moving forward.
The club shared the thrilling news. Proceeds from fans wishing to have ‘Diogo J. 20’ printed on the backs of their shirts will be donated straight to the LFC Foundation. We’ll be converting this money into a grassroots football program run in the name of Diogo Jota. His initiative is a testament to both his love for the sport and his desire to cultivate tomorrow’s stars.
In the wake of Jota’s untimely death, thousands of physical tributes were placed outside Anfield, forming a touching memorial space for shared mourning. Her son, Mark McGowan, has now personally removed these tributes and donated them to the memorial’s permanent collection. Liverpool FC are continuing to work closely with Jota’s family. Collectively, they’re turning the tributes into lasting memorials that shape and further Roy’s legacy.
The rest of the artefacts from the tribute space will be recycled and used in the creation of a memorial sculpture at Anfield. This sculpture serves as a central focal point for their remembrance. More than anything else, it invites fans and even future visitors to gain some insight into Jota’s legacy and his massive impact on the club.
Liverpool FC thanked the fans for their support in the wake of the tragic events.
