LIV Golf recently released proposals to increase team payouts by another $5 million in 2026. This decision marks a historic move towards inclusivity in the sensitive, male, heavily competitive realm of professional golf. The new organization is in the midst of implementing its own distinguishing team-based format. LIV Golf currently features 13 teams, each operating independently, allowing team captains considerable autonomy in their operations.
There’s no salary cap per se, but each team captain in LIV Golf is responsible for signing their own soldiers and securing their own commercial contracts. This structure encourages a beautifully competitive environment for individual team dynamics to thrive. On the PGA Tour, the PGA Tour still has their eight elevated events with huge prize pools—each $20 million dollars. The Players Championship is actually the highest payout on the PGA Tour, with a shocking $25 million purse.
As a part of that evolution, LIV Golf is spending $20 million in purse money on individual stroke play events. On top of that, they are committing another $10 million to their competition focused on teams. This strategic financial distribution highlights LIV Golf’s commitment to enhancing both individual player performance and team collaboration, reinforcing its innovative approach to the sport.
As it stands, LIV Golf’s independent team structure is set against the backdrop of the PGA Tour’s established competitive framework. The difference between the two entities goes beyond their operating models to the way they pay out money. The PGA Tour provides gargantuan lucrative incentives for individual stars alone. In contrast, LIV Golf’s strong focus on team competition could change the way golfers approach their careers.
Yet this decision to significantly increase payouts could not have come at a more precarious time on the professional golf landscape. They’re a bid to lure new talent and retain established players with a financial boondoggle their leagues can’t match. All of this will make the new shift to attract those who are considering their allegiance to more traditional formats or LIV Golf’s more dynamic model.
