The Detroit Lions have locked up linebacker Alex Anzalone with a new deal to keep him in the Motor City. This move follows Anzalone’s own statement of frustration over the failed negotiations. Anzalone has been one of the team’s most important players since he signed with Detroit in 2021. He is set to be an unrestricted free agent when the current NFL season ends, whenever that may be.
At 30 years old, Anzalone has gotten to a point where he is an indispensable defensive leader for the Lions. All ten games in the 2024 season, he was their starting quarterback. He registered the fourth-most tackles on the team, a testament to his down-to-down steadiness. His contributions go beyond the stats as seven tackles for loss attest, emphasizing his disruptive nature on the field.
In his four seasons with the Lions Anzalone has amassed an impressive 395 tackles. He’s added 6.5 sacks and two picks to his career tally as well. His clutch gene and propensity to make big plays on both ends of the floor increased his value to the squad.
Just a few weeks prior though, Anzalone was publicly airing his frustrations with painfully slow-paced contract negotiations. He asked serious questions about what all this means for his future with the Lions. These recent actions indicate that both sides are willingly and actively looking to arrive at resolution. Passing this resolution is the only thing that could keep him in Detroit.
