Liam Dawson Reflects on Hampshire’s Future and Championship Aspirations

Hampshire all-rounder Liam Dawson, who scored the winning runs in the final, spilled his thoughts on the new cricket season. He doesn’t deny the need for a pragmatic perspective, particularly in mind with the team’s present-day realities. Dawson entered the academy at the more typical age of seven years old. Since 2007, he has been a key figure for Hampshire. At 35 years of age, he is understandably looking to prioritize his club career. Alongside this, he takes stock of what has gone wrong during his time with the England setup.

Dawson’s worn the national shirt with pride on 20 occasions across all three formats. He was the linchpin for his national team during their historic win at the 2019 50 over World Cup. He admits he feels the prospect of earning a recall to the England fold is remote.

“I’m 35 now, if it comes then brilliant but I’m very realistic that those days are over.” – Liam Dawson

At the beginning of 2025, Dawson executed a new contract. This deal adds three more years at Hampshire, which is great. This commitment reflects his dedication to the club and his determination to help guide a younger roster as they navigate the challenges ahead.

“This year it will be a bit different though with the players we have lost. It will be a bit harder to win it but across the next three years hopefully we can be up there,” Dawson stated. His remarks highlight the recent departures of key players like Mohammad Abbas and James Vince, which he believes will impact their Championship aspirations.

If Dawson sounds newly bullish ahead of the coming season, he’s careful to project a more moderate tone. As a collective we need to temper our enthusiasm this summer and be realists. We’re excited to have so many younger players just starting their careers, and the opportunities that provides them are tremendous,” he said.

Dawson is determined to foster growth within the team while remaining ambitious about their prospects. He hopes to compete among the top teams in the Championship over the next three years despite acknowledging the hurdles they face this season.
