Lexi Thompson Aims for First Win in Over Six Years at Meijer LPGA Classic

Lexi Thompson, a big star in women’s golf, would be in position. She’s pursuing her first LPGA Tour win since June of 2019. It was a brilliant performance from her in the third round of the Meijer LPGA Classic. Today, that’s left her tied for the lead with five other players, the sextet all sitting at 11-under 205. No matter how the World Championship goes, this is Thompson’s last chance to end a winless drought that has stretched over six years.

Thompson displayed all of her skills to shine during Saturday’s round and help her team. Birdies on two of the last three holes thrust her up the leaderboard. Her most recent victory was at the ShopRite LPGA Classic, in which she won an exceptional field. Since then she hasn’t been able to make her way back to her former self. This moment is more important than ever for her career.

Nanna Koerstz Madsen, who at one point held a two-stroke lead. She stumbled at the finish, bogeying her final two holes of the round. This slip provided the opportunity for Thompson and others to close in and fight for the championship. Sofia Garcia raced out in front of the pack, getting to 13-under-par after just 12 holes. Then things got tough on her, as she made three straight bogeys and fell back into a tie atop the leaderboard.

Leading the firing squad with Thompson are Madelene Sagstrom, Hye-Jin Choi and Carlota Ciganda. Sagstrom won the T-Mobile Match Play in Las Vegas last April. During the first 18 of the round, she made an incredible three-under stretch of an eagle-birdie-eagle on holes four through six. Karis Davidson sits at nine under following a round of 71, while Megan Khang remains another stroke back alongside Chanettee Wannasaen, Bronte Law, and Celine Boutier.

With a stroke play format, the final round is sure to be a scintillating showdown as these gifted young golfers compete for the title. Thompson’s desire to break her winless streak would only sweeten the victory, lending an additional layer of intrigue to the title fight. As she prepares for Sunday’s play, all eyes will be on her to see if she can reclaim her position at the top of the leaderboard.
