Lee Roy Jordan, Legendary Linebacker and Community Leader, Passes Away at 84

Lee Roy Jordan, the Texas Longhorns All-American and celebrated Dallas Cowboys linebacker, has died at the age of 84. He’d be a big player, too, in the Dallas Cowboys’ first Super Bowl win. Jordan was a relentless defender and vocal floor leader. He was a major player in the Cowboys’ famed “Doomsday” defense of the 1970s.

Jordan’s football experience started at the University of Alabama—home to recurring gridiron greats—learning from the master, the legendary coach Paul “Bear” Bryant. On Alabama’s 1961 national championship team, he was the defensive leader on that team earning Associated Press All-American honors in 1962. His collegiate performances earned him a selection as the first-round draft pick by the National Football League’s Dallas Cowboys in 1963.

Throughout his decade-long stint with the Cowboys, Jordan tallied up a stunning 1,236 tackles. This achievement landed him at number two on the franchise’s all-time tackles list. He was an important player to the Cowboys’ victory. This achievement culminated in their 24-3 win against the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl VI at the end of the 1971 season. Jordan helped complete a linebacking crew that included Chuck Howley and defensive tackle Bob Lilly. His contributions were critical to the winning team.

Among Jordan’s honors are five Pro Bowl selections, proof of the hard work he’s put in on the field. He left a major mark on the franchise and its legacy. Consequently, he was the first player voted into the Cowboys’ Ring of Honor after Jerry Jones bought the team in 1989.

After retiring from football in 1976, Jordan dedicated himself to his community, where he became a respected figure and mentor. His dedication to serving others became a hallmark of his life after sports.

The Dallas Cowboys organization expressed deep sorrow over Jordan’s passing, stating, “With fearless instincts, leadership and relentless work ethic, Jordan was the embodiment of the Cowboys’ spirit.”
