Lawyers are currently examining nine additional cases of historical child abuse allegations involving the Celtic Boys Club, a separate entity from the Celtic Football Club. This increased scrutiny comes after the recent criminal convictions of three men tied to the Boys Club. It was the first time they were held criminally culpable for sexual crimes perpetrated upon minor athletes spanning over many decades.
Celtic FC has consistently claimed that it has no liability for the Boys Club’s actions. These two messages from the club’s president highlight how the Boys Club functions as its own sovereign entity. First, Celtic has, in good faith, been willing to settle multiple claims. That means they’re starting to show they are treating these unique and complex cases with greater leadership and finesse.
The inquiries are being led by Thompsons Solicitors, which is acting on behalf of former players of the Celtic Boys Club. In total, at least 24 former members will be paid a combined seven-figure sum. This total is only what has been agreed to in settlements so far. Although progress has been made in most matters, negotiations remain ongoing on three remaining allegations against Celtic, with settlement offers having been made and accepted on numerous other matters. In one instance, attorneys described being left “without direction,” which resulted in them being stymied and unable to proceed further.
Laura Connor of Thompsons Solicitors, who worked on the cases, said they were ground-breaking.
“This has been a landmark case-not only in terms of its legal significance but in the real, meaningful progress it represents for survivors of historical abuse at Celtic Boys Club and beyond.” – Laura Connor of Thompsons Solicitors
Connor underlined the toll that years of litigation has taken on Scotland’s built environment. He showed us that we can seek justice collectively without trampling on the rights of the minority.
“It has reshaped the legal landscape in Scotland, showing that justice can be pursued collectively without diminishing the voice or rights of the individual.” – Laura Connor of Thompsons Solicitors
The continuing conversations indicate an important time for survivors looking for recognition and reparation for the injustices they faced. Connor is proud to serve clients who have displayed astonishing courage and strength. They have successfully guided what most everyone—including, perhaps most importantly, members of Congress—views as an overlong process.
“We are incredibly proud to have been instructed by our clients, whose resilience throughout this unnecessarily lengthy process has been remarkable. Their strength, and that of all our clients, inspires us to continue the difficult fights for justice, finding novel ways to do so.” – Laura Connor of Thompsons Solicitors
While Celtic Park serves as the venue for football matches, including those in the William Hill Premiership like the recent clash between Celtic and Heart of Midlothian, the allegations against Celtic Boys Club mark a significant chapter in Scottish legal history. The developing story is a testament to the tireless work to redress historical injustices in the prevailing culture of sports organizations.
