Lavonte David Returns to Buccaneers for Another Season

Lavonte David, the acclaimed linebacker, has officially announced his return to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for another season. The 35-year-old David, known for his exceptional defensive skills, has signed a deal that includes $9 million guaranteed. This decision follows weeks of contemplation, as David had been noncommittal on his return at the end of the previous season. The Buccaneers afforded him ample time to weigh his options, ensuring a decision best suited to his aspirations.

David's impressive career statistics underscore his critical role in the league. Since 2012, he has defended 70 passes, ranking him second among active linebackers. He boasts 169 tackles for loss, the highest of any off-the-ball linebacker during the same period. His ability to recover fumbles is unmatched, with 20 recoveries being the most of any player across all positions since 2012. Furthermore, his 31 forced fumbles are the third most in the league.

David's resilience and leadership have been a cornerstone for the Buccaneers. He has served as team captain for 11 consecutive seasons and remains one of the most durable players with 208 starts. His 1,111 solo tackles are the most among active players since 2012. Last season, he was the only player in the NFL to achieve at least 100 tackles, 5.0 sacks, and three or more forced fumbles.

"For over a decade, he has been the heart of our defense, setting the standard with his relentless work ethic and passion for the game," – Jason Licht

David stands out as one of just four players since tackles were first tracked in 1994 to record at least 1,500 combined tackles, 35 sacks, and 10 interceptions. He joins an elite group alongside London Fletcher, Ray Lewis, and Bobby Wagner.

The decision to return was not taken lightly. David and Butler engaged in discussions over several weeks regarding retirement or a potential comeback.

"Lavonte and I continued to discuss retirement or returning for the last few weeks," – Butler

Butler emphasized that both he and the club wanted David to take the necessary time for such an important decision.

"Both the club and I wanted him to take some time to make a decision that was best for him." – Butler

David's loyalty to the franchise played a significant role in his decision to remain with the Buccaneers.

"He loves the game, he loves what the franchise has done for him and his career growth. He is the epitome of what it means to be a true professional." – Butler
