Marshon Lattimore, the Commanders’ cornerback, is poised to return to action as the team gears up for their wild-card matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Lattimore, who has been battling a left hamstring injury, was a full participant in practice on Wednesday and Thursday. While he took a veteran’s day of rest on Friday, all signs point to his participation in the crucial playoff game.
Lattimore's presence is expected to significantly enhance the Commanders' defense. Known for his intense matchups with Tampa Bay's receiver Mike Evans, Lattimore brings a competitive edge to the field. The two athletes have a storied rivalry dating back to 2017, marked by several on-field altercations. Notably, Evans faced suspensions in 2017 and 2022 for fighting with Lattimore, while Lattimore received a $10,500 fine in 2020 after an incident involving Evans.
"We're pumped to have him back in the mix," said Dan Quinn, reflecting on the impact of Lattimore’s return.
Acquired by the Commanders through a trade with New Orleans, Lattimore has only played one full game with his new team, which was against his former squad on December 15. Unfortunately, his campaign was marred by injuries as he left the Eagles game during the fourth quarter and later aggravated his hamstring in a December 22 victory over Philadelphia. This persistent injury previously sidelined him for five games earlier in the season.
Despite these setbacks, Lattimore remains optimistic and focused on his role against top receivers like Evans.
"I'm just trying to lock him down," Lattimore stated confidently ahead of the impending showdown.
Lattimore's return couldn't come at a more critical time for Washington. His ability to neutralize opposing receivers could play a decisive role in their playoff aspirations. The Commanders will rely heavily on his experience and tenacity to contain Tampa Bay's offensive threats.
