Late Drama Sees Manchester United Edge Burnley in Thrilling Encounter

Manchester United triumphed over Burnley with a nail-biting score of 3-2 in a match that showcased both skill and controversy. The decisive moment arrived in the dying minutes when Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty awarded for a foul on Amad Diallo, who was instrumental throughout the game. This victory, further enhancing United’s underdog status, returns them to the semifinals and reignites controversy over VAR’s use in football.

It was an early own goal by midfielder Josh Cullen that helped settle the nerves of the home side, giving them the lead with just two minutes played. Burnley responded with spirit and found an equalizer courtesy of Lyle Foster’s close-range finish. Just seconds later, Bryan Mbeumo restored a United lead immediately.

Match Highlights

Among those replacements were Mainoo and Sesko, showing just how deep this squad is. Burnley stepped out onto the pitch after their coach, Vincent Kompany. Burnley equalized shortly after through Foster’s goal, only for Mbeumo to restore United’s lead just seconds later. This quick-fire back-and-forth served as a sample demonstration of just how exhilarating this contest would be.

“I stand on the touchline, you score a goal and I feel like there’s a million things go through your mind, a checklist: was it offside? Did he step on his toe two minutes before? We need to get a computer out.” – Scott Parker

Controversial Decisions

The match was not without its controversies. Just five minutes into the first half, Manchester United appealed for a spot kick. Finally, they thought Kyle Walker was pulling Mason Mount’s shirt in the box, but the official didn’t see enough for a penalty. Later in the match, a second possible penalty was called back after a five-minute VAR check. It started when the referee incorrectly gave a foul against Amad Diallo just outside the area. The on-field decision was overturned just as quickly to result in a Burnley drop-ball.

In the last few minutes of the game, emotions bubbled over. Amad Diallo’s hard work would be rewarded when he won a penalty after Jaidon Anthony fouled him. This moment would prove to be the turning point as Fernandes confidently converted the penalty to give United the lead in the 97th minute.

“When Kyle Walker makes initial contact, he’s about a foot outside of the area, so I think it might be overturned and given a free-kick outside [the penalty area]. The actual contact is on the back of his calf and it’s outside the area.” – Mike Dean

Player Performance and Reactions

Amad Diallo Player of the Match it was an amazing performance by him. Undoubtedly a huge reason for Manchester United’s success, his ability to impact the game and win fouls became invaluable. Regardless of the final outcome in the match, Burnley’s fight and heart was apparent during the match. They thought they’d equalized late in the second half, only to have Foster net the dramatic game-winner. The host’s goal was ruled out for offside.

Scott Parker lamented the effect VAR was having on football. He added that it makes celebrations much tougher and changes the emotional element to scoring goals.

“It’s the way the game is going. It’s going to become the most sterile game there is. We’re probably months or a year away from not celebrating goals.” – Scott Parker
