On Saturday night, Northern Ireland suffered a crushing blow to their World Cup qualifying aspirations. They were dealt a huge shaking loss in the last moments by Slovakia in Group A. The game was played at the Kosicka Futbalova Arena and finished a nailbiting 1-0. Tomas Bobcek scored a breathtaking stoppage-time winner three minutes after entering the match to earn his first international cap.
Bobcek’s moment of destiny arrived in the 90+3 minute, when he scored off of a set piece sent in by Laszlo Benes. In tight quarters with a crowded box, Bobcek avoided defenders to find the back of the net. This triggered exuberant celebrations from the Slovak players and coaching staff. The goal was not without controversy. Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill has voiced his strong belief that the goal should have been ruled out due to a foul in the build-up.
O’Neill pointed out his disappointment after the game, underscoring the bitter base of the loss.
“You’re always disappointed when you lose a game late as we did, especially to a goal that should clearly have been disallowed.” – Michael O’Neill
Daniel Ballard, the Northern Ireland defender and captain, went to ground on the corner that led to Bobcek’s goal. It appeared as though he was shoved. O’Neill’s point was the obvious contact on Ballard. He contended this was sufficient basis for the officials to step in.
“There’s a clear push on Daniel Ballard at the corner, two hands on his back.” – Michael O’Neill
The game was hard-fought and tug-of-war with neither side able to score in regulation. Slovakia created plenty of chances but failed to score any until Bobcek’s late touch was enough to break through. The win provides a timely boost for Slovakia’s hopes of continuing their run in the qualifying campaign. It makes them more competitive for a top position in Group A.
Northern Ireland now have to go through a mammoth task to get themselves into the next round of qualification. The O’Neill also took exception to what he considered inconsistent calls from the match referee, qualified as officiating across the board.
“The other two goals that were disallowed should have been disallowed. The first goal was offside, the lines clearly show that, the second goal was handball.” – Michael O’Neill
The result of the match now leaves Northern Ireland in a very tricky position as they plan ahead to their other upcoming matches. O’Neill—most recently, the U.S. Women’s National Team head coach—has long called for more rigorous standards of officiating, especially in high-stakes games like this.
“You have to look at each incident on its merit, you can’t look at it cumulatively and referee the last incident differently from how you’ve refereed the other two. That’s what (VAR) is there for…” – Michael O’Neill
As for defeat Northern Ireland, they are still reeling from this historical loss. They’ll be looking to tighten up their defensive mistakes and find more offensive flow heading into their next matches. The emotional blow of conceding late in a game is what’s at stake. This singular experience could help inspire them as they prepare for their next debate.
