Landry Shamet’s Injury Overshadows Knicks’ Victory Over Mavericks

Landry Shamet has been lighting it up for the Knicks! Unfortunately, his explosive run of great performances came to an unceremonious stop on Saturday when he injured his right shoulder in a home game against the Orlando Magic. This injury comes on the heels of an awesome five-game stretch for Shamet. He hit double digits in each of those four consecutive outings, including a jaw-dropping 36-point effort in a 140-132 double-overtime win against the Miami Heat that rattled the league.

In the game against the Dallas Mavericks last Wednesday, Shamet contributed nine points in 23 minutes, helping the Knicks secure a win. His late-game heroics against the Mavericks featured two crucial three-pointers in the final 1:02, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure. On defense, Shamet made a key play by taking a critical charging foul in the game’s last second. With that play, he proved to be an indispensable cog of the team’s success.

Late in the first quarter of that game against Orlando, Shamet ran smack into a screen set by Wendell Carter Jr. To be fair, he was defending Jalen Suggs at half court on this play. Due to the extent of the impact, he instantly started favoring his right arm and you could see how much pain he was in. He left the court and headed to the locker room with 9:17 remaining in the quarter, where he was subsequently ruled out for the remainder of the game early in the second quarter.

Shamet had missed the entire 2024 preseason after dislocating his right shoulder back in October 2024, so it’s natural to be worried about this injury. Going forward, the Knicks will have to be cautious with him as they focus on the regular season.

Ohm Youngmisuk has been covering the NFL and NBA since 2006. He wrote in-depth on this new development and even called attention to how Shamet’s absence could ruin the Knicks playoff hopes. His scoring ability and clutch plays down the stretch in key moments have been very crucial for the team.
