Lancashire’s match against Leicestershire was an equally tense affair, with the game dramatically finishing in a draw to award both counties 11 points. The game, at Lancashire’s tater home, saw the hosts smash 263 runs in a single inning. Even after a tough pitch proved seemingly a factor, some bold Lancashire performers kept their heads even in the four-day battle.
Captain Keaton Jennings led the batting lineup with an insightful performance, noting the difficulty of batting first on the pitch. Even if the players wouldn’t admit, I think when you look back at the four days, batting first on that surface was tough going. I felt like in order to really win to get to 263 was probably a good average,” Jennings said following the bout.
The feature of Australia A’s innings was a brilliant knock from opener Marcus Harris, who finished on 77 not out. His great performance offered important knowledge to the innings, specifically as the crew fought to start with on. Bohannon was instrumental with the bat, scoring 45 not out at the end of the match. Bohannon survived two dropped catches in those first seven overs. This would have turned his innings and the match around completely.
On the bowling front, Lancashire’s attack showed their quality. Ian Holland took two wickets for just 22 runs, while Tom Scriven achieved his maiden five-wicket haul, claiming 5 wickets for 46 runs. Scriven continued to demonstrate his developing expertise as an in-form spearhead bowler for Lancashire. He ended the game with respectable figures of 90-3.
Lancashire’s bowlers were sorely tested but showed plenty of character to keep Leicestershire’s first innings total down to 209. For this, they should be more empowered and required to adapt quickly to changing conditions. This new lever will be key to generating sustained momentum in the 2024 season.
Following this hard-fought draw, Lancashire now have an overdue week’s rest. Their next fixture sees them host Gloucestershire, May 2-5. This position makes this forthcoming contest even more important than usual. The veteran bowler James Anderson is finally returning, making his long-awaited return after recovering from an early season injury.
Lancashire’s coach Alfonso Thomas said he was proud of his team despite conceding that there were lessons to learn. I think we’ve done some really positive things in this game. He added, “As always there are things we can improve on. I am extremely proud of the guys for what they did.
If Lancashire are to launch another big challenge in their defence in 2024, their bowling attack should be the bedrock for the whole season. They mix veteran players with young talent. They will hope to continue their strong form against Leicestershire and pick up some crucial points towards the end of the season in the next two matches.
