Liam Livingstone’s dismissal during the T20 Vitality Blast Finals Day has sparked significant controversy, culminating in Lancashire Cricket Club’s condemnation of misogynistic comments on social media. Livingstone, who has already represented England at Test and T20 level, made 29 runs before being given LBW by on-field umpire James Middlebrook. Livingstone appealed for a review, claiming that he had hit the ball with an inside edge. Third umpire Sue Redfern supported his claim and stood by the decision.
The specific incident had been during the nerve-shredding semi-final against Somerset, which Lancashire went on to lose. After the match, Lancashire expressed their anger at the umpire’s decision. They didn’t stop there and took the bold step to file a formal disciplinary complaint with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). The complaint focused particularly on Livingstone’s dismissal, which the players found especially contentious considering that he claimed to have hit the ball.
Lancashire’s elected leaders were rightly angry and dismayed at the decision. They are not alone in being disgusted by the crime, and they equally, and vehemently, denounce the hateful comments that have flooded social media in reaction to the crime.
“While the club remains deeply frustrated and disappointed with the decision, Lancashire is equally clear that it does not condone the misogynistic comments that have appeared across social media in response,” – Lancashire Cricket Club
The club added that they remain deeply committed to promoting an environment of inclusion and respect in cricket, adding,
“Such behaviour is unacceptable, does not reflect the values of our club or the wider Red Rose family, and has no place in the game.” – Lancashire Cricket Club
Somerset away was a watershed moment for both teams. They fought tooth and nail to earn their spot in the final. The decision knocked Lancashire out of the running. It opened fruitful discussions on perceptive umpiring decisions and how players should be treated in the sport.
