LaMelo Ball, the third overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, has publicly addressed recent rumors regarding his future with the Charlotte Hornets. Despite facing challenges this season, including a right ankle sprain that has limited him to just nine games, Ball reassured fans and the organization of his dedication to building a winning team in Charlotte.
Ball is under contract with the Hornets through the 2029-30 season after signing a four-year extension worth up to $260 million. He has over $168 million remaining on his contract, including $37.9 million this season. Averaging 21.6 points and 9.6 assists per game, he’s still the heart and soul of the Show Me State team. As noted above, he has major issues with his shooting at the moment. His 38.5 FG% is a career low, and he’s hitting only 29.8% from three.
In his first five season, Ball has suited up for just 231 of 410 possible games. Recurring ankle injuries have sidelined him for much of that time. These self-inflicted wounds have spurred questions about his long-term dedication to the franchise. In an effort to dispel these rumors, Ball took to the social media platform to share his perspective.
“He never heard that come from me, so the source is not from me.” – LaMelo Ball
Ball’s statements follow his observation of media reports which he believed mischaracterized what he was trying to accomplish. To further make clear where he stands, he reposted the story to social media. To represent his current mood about the way some narratives have played out, he pasted a clown emoji over his picture.
“When they get too big, you know, you gotta say something,” Ball remarked, emphasizing the importance of addressing misinformation. He further elaborated on his focus on the team:
“I ain’t saying nothing. I’m just trying to win, that’s it. That’s what we’re going to keep doing.” – LaMelo Ball
His coach, Charles Lee, lauded Ball’s dedication to the Hornets in his statement on the matter. Lee described Ball as “a huge, huge piece of what we do, offensively and defensively,” underscoring the young guard’s critical role in the team’s strategy.
“I’m glad to hear what he had to say because I would echo a lot of the same things,” Lee added, reflecting on their strong working relationship and shared vision to build a successful franchise in Charlotte.
Even at 24 years old, it’s clear that Ball’s potential and talent are still off the charts. No one needs to convince the Hornets organization how valuable he is. They hope to continue to make the most of his unique skills, particularly as he works his way back from his brutally sprained ankle and returns to top form on the court.
For as much as he’s under the microscope and under the proverbial gun this season, LaMelo Ball is pledged to Charlotte—as in, for life. His goal isn’t simply to improve his own game. Simultaneously, he works to instill a culture of winning among the franchise’s players and staff.
