Lamar Jackson Claims Top Spot in Orlovsky’s Ranking of NFL Quarterbacks

In an NFL quarterback power ranking earlier this month, Dan Orlovsky placed Jackson at number one. He demonstrated elite skill in every single metric. His poise to play well within the scheme and make plays out of the pocket has been one of many differences he’s shown his counterparts this summer. Jackson received praise for his very creative and electrifying playmaking ability. He surpassed Joe Burrow in key metrics, sealing his position as one of the league’s top signal-callers.

This assessment comes as Joe Burrow, who had been ranked No. 1 in a previous list, continues to showcase remarkable performance metrics. Last year, Burrow killed it from the pocket, with a stellar QBR of 71.7 – good for fourth in the NFL. He threw a spectacular ONLY 35 QB-unicorn touchdown passes. Jackson ended up beating him in pocket QBR as well with a stellar 74.9. Outside the pocket, he raised it to another level with a league-high QBR of 92.7.

Needless to say, the rankings feature a lot of top-tier QB talent. Jayden Daniels’ elusive ability, Patrick Mahomes’ off-platform throwing, and Josh Allen’s arm talent have all wowed in their own right.

Jackson’s Dominance in Key Metrics

Beyond being the highest-ranked quarterback in QB Rate Overall, Jackson exhibited elite-level skills when under duress. When he was pressured and had to escape the pocket, Jackson had 11 touchdown passes and zero interceptions. Even in tough situations, this incredible stat speaks to his impact as a playmaker.

Specifically, Orlovsky praised Jackson’s other-worldly talents. He boasted, “I don’t know that anybody in the league is better than him at working in a phone booth.” This reflection underlines Jackson’s natural ability to operate and make the right throw when things aren’t clean.

To add to this, Jackson’s play extending execution and quick processing is very impactful on his effectiveness. His performance metrics really highlight how dual-threat and tough Wilson is as a quarterback. That’s what makes him the Yankees’ most dangerous player on the field.

Burrow’s Consistent High Ranking

Even though he was narrowly beaten out by Jackson in this most recent review, Joe Burrow has an outstanding record. He has now ranked No. 1 for four straight lists proving unparalleled dominance in his performance. Burrow shows a stunning 71.7 passer rating when he sticks to the pocket. Last season, he tossed a jaw-dropping 35 touchdown passes, reinforcing his place as the perennial top option among quarterbacks.

Dan Orlovsky noted Burrow’s confidence and precision in passing, stating, “I see that kind of confidence in locating the ball in the 10 quarterbacks listed above.” This confidence is important to any quarterback’s success, but is perhaps most critical in high-stakes, high-pressure situations.

Burrow’s quick processing and pre-snap identification of coverage and blitz looks has turned him into one of the must-watch players in the league. His continued presence at the top of these rankings reflects not only his talent but his capacity to lead and inspire his team.

Rising Stars and Established Leaders

The rankings did provide insight into some of the other emerging talents and established order surrounding a highly competitive NFL quarterback landscape. Jayden Daniels, number 1 on our list, has traits that could make him one of the best in the league if he reaches his ceiling. At the same time, Patrick Mahomes hasn’t slowed down, staying at the top with a similar ranking. His unique brand of playmaking and exciting, unorthodox quarterbacking has him firmly entrenched in the discussion as one of the best quarterbacks in his class.

You’ll notice the name Josh Allen very high up on the lists, coming in at No. 3 overall on one list. Known for his strong arm and dynamic playmaking ability, Allen remains a force to be reckoned with on the field.

C.J. Stroud to rank No. 6 on one such list. Justin Herbert ranks as low as No. 10 and No. 8 on other such lists. Both players show immense potential for their squads, creating a much more competitive landscape between NFL signal callers.

Orlovsky’s assessments focus on traits that are critical for success at the quarterback position. He noted, “Accuracy and ball placement aren’t the same thing, and when I’m talking about the most important traits in a QB, ball location carries more weight.” This first-person view further drives home the value of precision and decision-making for quarterbacks looking to make the jump from one level to the next.
